PURPOSE The purpose of the report is to inform Subcouncils of the activities of the Department for the period 1 April 2019 to 30 June 2019. 4, FOR DECISION BY This report is for noting by the Subcouncils. 5. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY This report provides an overview of the activities of the Library and Information Services Department (LIS) for the period 1 April 2019 to 30 June 2019. 6. | RECOMMENDATIONS It is recommended that the report be noted. DISCUSSION/CONTENTS The Department aims for excellence in providing a highly professional and cost-effective lending, reference and community information service. This report deals with the monitoring of service delivery. Services Brown's Farm library issued library books to Masiphumelele senior club, Nonzaliseko and iThembalabantu pre-schools as part of the block loan service during the quarter under review. All the libraries in Sub Council 13 held Information Literacy sessions. One of the topics that was on the research list from the learners that visited the libraries was Truth and Reconciliation Commission in South Africa. Learners were furnished with all the relevant information resources to conduct their research. Programmes (Events and promotions) An overview of new membership, circulation, gate readings and SmartCape usage at the libraries, as well as an analysis of the types of programmes and the number of attendees per programme per library is attached as Annexure A Brown's Farm library hosted their annual Grade 7s reading competition on the 26" of April 2019. There were five local primary schools that participated in this year’s competition. The learners were judged on their fluency, spelling and ‘comprehension on the following languages, i.e. English and IsiXhosa. Both the teachers and the leamers were excited to be part of the competition, All participants received certificates and goodie bags. Brown's Farm library held a digital literacy session. The two groups that benefited from this session were women and the physically disabled people. These women generally come to the library for family planning that is being administered by the City Health Department officials and the physically disabled normally come to the library to meet social workers. Sikhululekile reading club in partnership with Crossroads library held weekly reading sessions at Crossroads library in April 2019. The aim was to help children to improve their reading skills. Four local primary schools participated in the reading competition which took place at Crossroads library in May 2019. Three special storytelling sessions were held for the senior citizens at Crossroads library. Two Early Childhood Development Centres (ECDs) from Ntileni and Boys Town informal settlements were visited by the Crossroads and Brown's Farm (4 Subcounel 13 Report 1908 2019 Page 2 of 5 [18 January 2016) libraries’ staff members for storytelling sessions. Various stories were read to the children, The ECDs were encouraged to apply for institutional library membership cards. The library cards will enable them to take out books that will prepare the children at their facilities for school. 7.1.3 Challenges / Successes Crossroads library had an author talk in April 2019. Lulamile Satyo who is one of the local authors addressed the learners. As part of his talk session he highlighted the importance of reading and the career opportunities as an author. Approximately 150 learners attended the event. Brown's Farm in partnership with Crossroads and Philippi East libraries and Social Development and Early Chithood Development Department hosted an integrated storytelling session in June 2019. The theme was winter season. 56 children from ECD Centers attended the programme, On the 14" of June 2019 Brown's Farm library, in partnership with other City of Cape Town Departments and NGOs, had a Youth Day celebration. The theme was “promoting a healthy lifestyle through sports and arts’. Brown's Farm library demonstrated and presented services that are available for the youth and handed out promotional materials such as bags, water bottles, rulers and pens. Membership application forms were also issued to the attendees. 7.4.4 Repairs and maintenance No major repairs were done at the Sub Council 13 libraries. 7.4.5 Security No major incidents were reported 7.2.
