This lecture summary discusses mobility and transportation, focusing on the "three evils" of traffic congestion, accidents, and environmental impacts. The lecturer talks about the history of transportation prior to cars and how traffic engineering emerged with the rise of automotive vehicles. Currently, bottlenecks are a major cause of congestion. The summary also discusses how automated driving technology could help reduce the three evils by preventing bottleneck effects. During the COVID-19 pandemic, mobility was affected as people stayed home, impacting public transportation. The lecturer proposes reconsidering traffic demand categories and discusses optimization of traffic signal control at multiple intersections using AI, as well as making signals more resilient during power outages. The overall goal is developing traffic signals that balance safety

Mobility & motorization history with three evils term
Before the car had not been invented, mobility choices are only limited, such as walking, using tame animals, or riding a carriage. They are all need some infrastructure to let hem move, for instances road. In 1886, a combustion engine vehlce was invented, and because of that traffic engineering initially was needed to cope the development on automative transport. However, automative transport is inseparable to what we know as three evils, such as traffi congestion, traffic accidents, and environmental impacts. To encounter these problems, road transport system should be considered, and interaction between its elements shold be carried out. - Congestion & bottleneck Bottleneck is a caused of traffic congestion. It is occured when traffic demand is larger than road capacity due to narrow road and it caused queue behind.the users who are not intend to use the bottleneck will also be involved. - Automated driving Automated driving technology can reduce the three evils of road transport and introduce new transport service. It can prevent bottlenecek effect due to suddenly speed reduction.
Mobility under the effects of pandemic covid-19
At he time of pandemic covid-19, people are instructed to stay at home andrefrain for non-urgent outings. This affects to crisis for public transporation which is riding together. In pandemic situation, it is difficult to go outside unless urgent mobility such as emergency life saving activities, fire fighting, and so on. We need to reconsider the traffic demand which is divided into two categories, principal demand and derivative demand.
Traffic signal control
- Optimization of multile signalized intersections The optimization is carried out both on local and global area. The project is optimized by AI to control multiple sensor. - Adoption to super-aged, infrastructure maintenance Currently the connecion of signal is very expensve and it is needed to be efficient. The signal should be kept alive when the power souce is shutting down. - Paradignm-shift promotion with safety & efficiency balance The traffic signal need to be developed in order to have functions for power supply, wireless communiation, sensor, and control algorithm.
