The derivative

Consider the function y = f(x). If ∆x is any increment given to the


independent variable x and ∆y is the corresponding increment in the dependent
variable y, then the derivative of the function with respect to x is the limit of the
ratio ∆x and ∆y, as ∆x approaches to zero
