Issue at hand: On-going east and west-African crisis
Represented Country: Algeria

In the vast semi-arid expanse of West Africa’s Sahel, a series of military coups have dealt a
heavy blow to the region’s political stability and democratic transformation, and created a new
era of insecurity and uncertainty. This has been worsened by Boko Haram’s attack in Nigeria,
power struggles in Mali and Guinea and evolvement of ISGS and ISWAP in the center of Sahel
region. In addition to that, after five consecutive below-average rains, the humanitarian crisis in
the Horn of East Africa is expanding and deepening. Combined with insecurity and
macroeconomic volatility, the impact of the drought on food and nutrition security has been
devastating. Across Ethiopia, Kenya and Somalia, an estimated 22 million people are now
acutely food insecure because of the drought.
These issues have led to humanitarian crisis, ethnic cleansing, higher inflation rates, food
insecurity, economic downfall, declining of democracy and lack of accessibility to the health and
educational sector. For this reason, Algeria intervened, it wanted to reassess the management of
its security along its southern borders and seek a peaceful resolution for the conflict in order to
avoid the threat of civil war as ECOWAS predicted that incase there is no restoration of
democracy, so it will force its way through military intervention which would in turn pro-long
and worsen these crises. Thus, Algeria offered to provide a 6-month transitional government to
Niger to solve this problem in a short span. Historically, Algiers has long positioned itself as a
traditional mediator of conflicts by its membership in CEMOC, FIAA and launching APSA.
The steps to solve this problem has taken place. Firstly, Algeria has consulted with UN regarding
the restore of constitution. Secondly, WFP has funded a lot in East Pakistan to fulfill the needs of
deprived and suffering people however WFP urgently requires US$810 million over the next six
months to keep life-saving assistance going and invest in long-term resilience in the Horn of East
Africa. Thirdly, the LCBC Ministerial council adopted a regional strategy for stabilization
recovery and resilience of the Boko Haram affected areas of the lake Chad basin on 30th August.
