ARCHITECTURAL
GUIDELINES FOR
ARCHITECURAL DESIGN PROPONENTS

Prepared by Arch. Carlo J. Madrona UAP RMP Thesis Class Adviser SY 2020 – 2021
Architectural Design Background

Design is the epitome of a student’s college life, hopefully with their projects they
can both showcase their growth as an architecture student displaying all the
needed aspects needed to be future architects and as an individual with redeeming
character of a future professional.

This guidelines will make sure that we will have a standardized approach on our
presentation while still providing liberty to students for their defense requirements
and presentations. This guidelines will be only used as a class basis (architectural
Design 7 & 8) and will not be used on any purpose and on any other class.

Requirement for PROJECT PRESENTATION

Students are required to submit, attend and present a variety of required aspect to
both concerned individual and as well as panels. This will be the sole and main
basis for their grades for their final design subject.

Students requirement are not limited only to drawings and manuscript but also
including required aspects such as different required forms to be handled by the
thesis proponents.

Students are also required to attend minimum meetings with their design class
adviser and thesis technical adviser on a timely scheduled meeting.

The main output of the students and the aspects of each group will be divided into
drawing requirements, written requirements, presentation requirements and
attendance (meeting) requirements.

REQUEST FOR MOCK DEFENCE (OPTIONAL)

Students may request an optional mock defense on a given period of time providing
the group can provide 50 percent completion on their overall requirement total.
Students may only need to inform their technical adviser and thesis adviser that
they will undergo a mock defense.
The defense (consultation aspect) of the mock presentation can only be attained
during a given time only. It is also dependent on the availability of the examiner.

An actual presentation where the DESIGN proponents will explain their given
outputs in an online setup. (No uploaded video presentation)

Questions may be directed at the students during their presentation and after their
presentation

The thesis proponents must provide a post report regarding the comments and
suggestions of their Panels to their technical adviser and thesis adviser.

REQUEST FOR FINAL DEFENCE

Students who have accomplished the requirement for their approval and
endorsement may finally request a schedule for their final defense. Students will
provide a formal letter asking for a schedule for their panel’s availability one letter
must be submitted to their Thesis adviser and will be forwarded to the Thesis Class
Head Panel and the Officer in Charge for the department.

This letter must provide the basics detail of the group (student’s name, Thesis Title,
at least 2 to 3 Student’s Available time and date and a letter asking formally for
each panels agreement on a scheduled date.

The period of the FINAL defense will only be limited to A DATE GIVEN BY THE
ADVISER not including the dates of encoding of grades and 2 days prior of the
encoding period to give time to their professors to cater to their obligations on their
given subject. (This dates may be due for changes depending on different changes
on the school activities and school calendar)

PROCEDURE DURING THE DEFENSE

The candidate and the committee should plan to be available for two hours,
which is the maximum duration of the defense.

Normally, the defense will proceed as follows:

1. The class adviser introduces the candidate

2. The candidate gives a 15-20 minute presentation of their work.

3. Following the presentation the Thesis adviser invites the Thesis
Panels to ask questions of the candidate.
4. Questions may relate directly to the thesis or the candidate’s
understanding of the general subject matter of the thesis.

5. The Thesis proponents ensures that the Thesis Evaluation form is completed.

DECISION OF THE THESIS DEFENSE COMMITTEE

The committee must select from the following options:

1. The project is acceptable as is, or with minor revisions. A majority vote

is required.
2. The project is acceptable, but major revisions are required. A majority
vote is required.
3. The project is unacceptable. Written comments must be provided
to explain this decision. A unanimous vote is required.
4. A student will receive a passing grade with all panels passed including
the head panel. A group will receive a passing grade with two panels
passed, (including the head panel) with 1 panel failed.
5. The group will only receive a passing grade if the evaluation grade is not
lower than 75 %
6. A group may receive a failing grade if two panels (including the head
panel) gave the group a failing grade. A group may receive a failing grade
if all the panels (including the head panel)
7. If a group receives a failing grade for the head panel and two passing
grade from the panels, the group is a candidate for reexamine or re
defense.

A majority decision of the examining committee will be binding except in the case
of an unacceptable project, which requires a unanimous vote.
FOLLOWING THE DEFENCE

Minor revisions

Minor revisions are corrections that can be made immediately to the satisfaction of
the Supervisor. Minor revisions may include:

1. Typographical or grammatical errors

2. Missing footnotes
3. Need for further discussion or elaboration in a few areas
4. Incomplete reference
5. Need for minor clarification of content
6. Major flaws in grammar and presentation

Groups who are given a minor revision verdict may receive an evaluation grade
from each thesis panel right away, or the thesis panels may unanimously decide the
students’ needs to resubmit their works with changes for their minor revisions
before giving out their verdict and evaluation grades.

The period to make changes with their revisions will be limited to 3 days only.

The highest grade a group may receive upon receiving a minor revision verdict is
80 % only.

Major Revisions

Major revisions are corrections requiring further research, architectural changes, or

other substantive revisions. These revisions will require an additional re-examine to
complete and may require re- defense on the part of the proponents. Major
revisions may include:

1. Significant Design technical errors or inaccuracies

2. Misinterpretation and/or misuse of material
3. Omission of relevant materials
4. Lacking Design Theories Used
5. Unsubstantiated findings or conclusions
6. Improper data analysis
7. Lack of scholarly context
8. Need to rewrite substantial portions to strengthen the thesis
Groups who are given a major revision verdict needs to reschedule a reexamine or
re defense

The period to make changes with their major revisions will be limited to 7 days
only. The highest grade a group may receive upon receiving a minor revision
verdict is 75 % only.

Some groups are no longer qualified to receive an option of Re Examine or Re

defense for the reason that they have agreed upon with the thesis defense panel
that they have already used that option during their preliminary defense during
architectural Design 7, henceforth from that day forward they have agreed upon a
pass or fail policy incoming their design 8 subject.

Unacceptable project design

Grounds for Unacceptable design project:

1. Deficiency of the given requirements

2. Irrelevant architectural theories and concepts
3. Proponents failed to voice out their own judgement and justification
4. Architectural Work that doesn’t reflect professional and academic level of the
students
5. Failure to present on time

Procedure regarding unacceptable thesis:

1. Written comments must be provided to explain this decision. A unanimous

vote is required.
2. A thesis may be re-examined only once.
