• Lutein and zeaxanthin are antioxidants in macula, help to

filter blue light.
• Light exposure-induced retinal damage model was established to
evaluate the effects of black currant, goji berry, chrysanthemum
extract, lutein ester, etc.
• Black currant, goji berry, chrysanthemum extract were
able to alleviate the retinal damage induced by light
exposure.
• The underlying mechanism might be through a prosurvival
mechanism by inhibiting MAPK signaling and an antioxidative
mechanism by elevating HIF protein expression.
