Among the Hidden by Margaret Peterson Haddix

In the chapter tasks below, you will prove, clarify, and/or reinforce each
statement. To do this, you will provide supporting evidence by citing
quotations directly from the novel. We will go over how to do this in class.
Remember to always provide the page number.

Provide 1-3 strong quotes to support each statement in Chapters 1 to 10.

You will not answer in your own words. You only need to provide the
direct quote that supports the statement.

Chapter 10 For this chapter, find quotes that disprove the statement.

24. Luke’s family loved his bread.

For Chapters 11 to 20, you will answer each question in a complete

sentence or two. Your sentence will be mostly in your own words but must
also feature supporting evidence quoted directly from the novel.

Chapter 11

25.Luke is sure someone is hiding in the Sports Family house.

Luke keeps his eye on the Sports Family house, and one day he saw “a light
go on and off (pg. 49)” after the house should’ve been empty. On another
day, he saw “a glow of a TV screen (pg. 50)” when supposedly nobody was
home.

Chapter 12

26. Luke has put a lot of thought into his plan to make contact with
the hidden child in the Sports Family house.

Luke spent a lot of time planning “his route” (52). He knows he needs to
“<details about his plan> (pg)” to get there unseen. He thought to himself,
“<a thought about going to the Sports Family house>(pg).”

represents.

Chapter 14

28.Luke was surprised when he saw the child.

Chapter 15

29. Jen isn’t a Jennifer.

For the following 5 chapters, you will continue to answer in your own
words using embedded quotes as supporting evidence. Instead of
statements, there will be questions.

Chapter 16

30.Why does Luke keep feeling insulted?

Chapter 17

31. Why does the population law exist?

Chapter 18

32.Why is Luke so scared of computers?

Chapter 19

33. Why do some books and/or articles say the Population Law is good
and others say it is evil?

Chapter 20

34.Why does Jen think fake I.D.s are a bad idea?

For the final 10 chapters, you will continue to use a combination of your
own words and quotes. The responses for these chapters need to be in
paragraph form. This means there needs to be a topic sentence, a body
featuring supporting evidence, and a closing or transitional sentence. Be
sure to plan before you write each paragraph.

Chapter 21-24
35. Luke thinks the rally is a dangerous idea and ultimately decides not to
go. Why?

The Plan:
Luke likes Jen and feels like hiding isn’t so bad because he has her as a
friend, and they get to hang out and have fun together so there’s no
point risking their lives at the rally. “He could go on this way forever,
as long as he got to visit Jen (106).
Luke doesn’t think the others will show up. “...what if they don’t show
up? (109)
Luke thinks hiding is better than risking his life at the rally. “Maybe I
just don’t mind hiding as much as you do (111)”
Luke knows Jen’s reasons for the rally are good but he’s still too
scared. He’s not sure it will work out like she says it will. “Everything
she said was right. But that couldn’t mean he had to go. (111).”
Luke is scared. He doesn’t think he is “brave (112)” enough.
Luke thinks the rally is “too dangerous (112)”
Luke thinks Jen isn’t being realistic because she is a Baron and thinks
she can get away with anything because she is “special (114)” and her
parents have “lots of money (114).”
He thinks this rally is just a way for Jen to “show off (114).”
Luke is a coward. “Hiding again. (115)”
Luke doesn’t believe in himself. “People like me - we just let things
happen to us. (117)”

Now go through your plan and choose three or four details that best address
and explore the topic or question. Put those details into a logical order. Then
draft your paragraph.

The Paragraph:

Luke knows Jen’s reasons for the rally are “right (111),” but he decides not
to go because he’s afraid it is “too dangerous (112).” He’s worried Jen isn’t
being realistic about the danger because she’s a Baron who is used to getting
away with breaking the rules because her parents have “lots of money
(114).” Luke isn’t sure the other shadow children will “show up (109).” Plus,
he thinks people like Jen change the world and people like him just “let
things happen (117).” Mostly Luke isn’t “brave (112)” enough and would
rather be safe “hiding (115)” than take a chance on the rally.
Let’s analyze the paragraph:
The topic sentence lets us know the paragraph will be about Luke’s
fear about the rally.
The body gives us details about Luke’s concerns:
Jen isn’t being realistic
Others may not show up
Doesn’t believe in himself

The conclusion once again states that Luke just isn’t brave enough to
take the risk of going to the rally.

Chapter 25-26

36.After the day of the rally, Luke begins going crazy with worry about
Jen. He does everything he can to figure out where she is or what has
happened to her. Eventually, Luke finds his courage and heads over to
her house to investigate.

Talk about the risks Luke takes to find out what happened to Jen (using
direct evidence) and how that proves he deeply cares about her (make a
connection in your own words).

Chapters 27-29: You will have to answer this question in 2 paragraphs.

37. Jen’s dad offers Luke an opportunity to escape his life as a shadow
child. Why is it difficult for Luke to trust Jen’s dad? Why does Luke
decide to trust Jen’s dad and accept the fake i.d.?

Chapter 30

38.Luke’s family is sad to see him go, but they understand why he must
begin a new life like Lee Grant. Like his family, Luke is sad to leave
and a little fearful of what lies ahead. Luke believes Lee Grant has a
chance to honour Jen and make a difference.

Talk about what Luke must do to become Lee and how he might use this
new identity to make a difference.
