HOMEWORK FOR WEEK 9 (A#2 development)

1. Create a table of contents for your magazine, to be designed across pages 2-3.
You should include an editor's welcome as we talked about in class. Contents can fill
a single page design, or even 3/4 of the spread, this 'split' is up to you. You can
include a contributors panel (a short 'hypothetical' staff list) to make your magazine
look more authentic, you will list yourself as the Editor, make up the other names.

Your 24-page flat plan will help you create the contents page listing (for your 24-page
upcoming magazine). The contents page design is a great exercise in summarising,
and testing, the design rules you establish across the publication, a place to show off
the upcoming contents of your magazine. Remember that each article in your contents
need a few words of explanation, not just the article or section title.

Make sure your show typographic hierarchy, 'chunking' and clear points of entry, to
navigate to page numbers etc. Look back at all the references you have seen or
collected for inspiration. The core design elements should flow across your own
magazine pages, creating a signature style.

2. Start work on your layouts for page 4-5 and 6-7, one DPS from each section –
FOB or BOB, and a feature/cover story (MOB) design, pay attention to consistency
with your A or B or C Parent page structure. Of course, also choose your strongest
cover (following week 7 feedback) and refine that to a high standard, making sure all
inclusions are covered. Remember that image resolution (effective ppi), bleed,
CMYK images and PARAGRAPH STYLES are a requirement for A#2 and A#3 (see
links below).

You can create PARAGRAPH STYLES using your A#1 and important them to A#2,
or set them up fresh and clean. Once set up and applied to different pieces of text
(headlines, intros, bylines, subheads, captions, body text), these styles can be edited
(>Style Options) and universal changes will be applied throughout your document.

Upload your contents and layouts in progress, to PADLET – cover plus 3 spreads
PDF, plus back page advert. You are also welcome to include more than 8 pages –
showing different versions of spreads for comment, before finalising your content. In
week 10 we will be reviewing your finalised Indesign files prior to submission.
