TITLE:
Fix for Lack of response from touch panels or TGC/LGC controls.
FCO79500016 1
INTRODUCTION:
Symptom : 1. Touch panels do not respond. This can be both touch panels or just the left or right touch
panel.
EX 2. One of more TGC/LGC controls do not respond.
Cause : The failure symptoms described above occur when the 74ACT138 decoder (U801) on the
Keyscanner board fails. The 74ACT138 (U801) controls a series of DG271 CMOS switches,
which are used to multiplex various user interface controls into an ADC on the Keyscanner
board. These controls include the TGC slide switches, LGC slide switches, and touch panel
interface signals. A failure at U801 causes contention on the ADC inputs, which results in
erroneous reading of the user controls.
The 74ACT138 (U801) is prone to damage when the system power supply enters an abnormal
state, which is triggered by a momentary power interruption. In this state, all the DC outputs
of the supply are present, except +12V. As a result, the system tries to power the +12V rail
through a path that exists between the outputs of the 74ACT138 and the DG271 input diodes.
The resulting current flow violates the output current specification of the device and if
allowed to dwell in this abnormal state, the part becomes very hot and eventually fails.
The Keyscanner boards that we have seen with this failure use 74ACT138’s, which are
manufactured by Fairchild Semiconductor. Testing has shown that these parts will fail within
1.5 to 2 hours if the system supply is allowed to dwell in the “no +12V state”. Older
PI
74ACT138 parts manufactured by National Semiconductor lasted for 2 days or longer before
showing signs of stress. Investigating the two different vender parts showed the Fairchild part
has a much smaller die than the National part. The smaller die part is more susceptible to
damage from an over current condition. This explains why the failures seemed to have
occurred more recently.
Note: The National part was used to manufacture the older Key Scanner Audio boards, part
number 77921-60100/8, and many of the 77921-60110/8 Key Scanner Audio boards. Since
the National part does not fail as quickly as the Fairchild part, the older 77921-60100/8 Key
Scanner boards are not included as part of this FCO.
Remedy : In order to prevent damage to U801 if/when the system supply enters an abnormal (no +12v)
state the following change will be implemented.
RE
Replace 74ACT138 (1820-5941) at location U801 with 74ALS138 (1820-4257)
The ALS parts have internal resistance, which will limit the amount of output current to
acceptable levels should the system supply enter an abnormal (no +12V) state.
The change will remove the electrical overstress condition that exists when the system +12V
supply drops out.
