Through this forum, the Faculty of Cultural Studies Universitas Brawijaya would like to play a significant role in strengthening an academic tradition of building a research culture and networks between researchers, academics, students, and practitioners. Focusing on the humanities, education, and the arts, this conference is expected to respond to various current issues interwoven with the dynamics of humans’ lives and environment. In addition to being a meeting for dialectics of ideas, this conference also encourages presenters and participants to resolve varying cultural problems. Asan annual event, ICOLLEC is ona mission to encourage the emergence of ideas and research that explores various cutting-edge phenomena. This mission is based on the stance that science must evolve and adapt to the demands of discoveries required by society. Organizing annual scientific meetings is also essential for evaluating the development of science to offer a new approach or perspective more relevant to the current conditions of society. ICOLLEC also facilitates the publication of variousarticles through an objective review process. This scientific meeting will document the academic artefacts that scientists have inscribed by providing more opportunities for publication in proceedings and journals. Furthermore, by publicly publishing various ideas and research findings presented in this forum, this conference also expects valuable feedback to plan its future events. Universitas Brawijaya Malang's Faculty of Cultural Studies is the conference's host institution. Ce vey GOLLEC Keynote Profile Summary Suzanne Choo is Associate Professor in the English Language and Literature Academic Group at the National Institute of Education, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. Her research has been published in various peer-reviewed journals such as Harvard Educational Review, Reading Research Quarterly, Research in the Teaching of English, among others, Her book, Reading the world, the globe, and the cosmos: Approaches to teaching literature for the twenty-first century was awarded the Critics Choice Book Award by the American Educational Studies Association. She was awarded the Excellence in Teaching Commendation award by the National Institute of Education in 2016 and 2021. Her most recent book is Teaching ethics through literature: The significance of Ethical Criticism in a global age (Routledge, 2021). She is founder and co-chairperson of the National Schools Literature Festival in Singapore. The intensification of globalization at the turn of the twenty-first century has been precipitated by the spread of digital technologies and social media. On one hand, youths are more connected than ever before and students have more opportunities to be agents of social justice in their virtual or physical communities. On the other hand, digital connectivity has also contributed to the rise of post-truth and deep fake technologies. In the first part of this presentation, I discuss the potential use of digital literature as a way to encourage critical and participatory citizenship capacities. | introduce various features of digital literature (including hypertext literature) and the key critical-ethical skills that students need to engage with their various modalities. In the second part of this presentation, I prose truth-seeking pedagogies as an important approach to engaging with digital literature. Using various examples, I show how truth-seeking pedagogies are fundamental to promoting interpretive justice in a post-truth digital age. ICOLLEC Keynote Profile Summary Dee Kwansei Gakuin Uni School of International Studies sity, Japan Dr. Joshua John Jodoin is a graduate of the doctoral program at Kyoto University’s Graduate School of Global Environmental Studies (GSGES) and an instructor at Kwansei Gakuin University in Japan. He has previously worked at Konan University, the University of Nottingham Ningbo China (UNNC), and Bilkent University in Ankara, Turkey. Joshua's research interests are in the areas of Language Education for Sustainable Development (LESD) and English as a Foreign Language (EFL). Joshua John Jodoin: jodoin.john.65m@kyoto-u.jp C= vey COLLEC Language Education for Sustainable Development (LESD): Finding the Powerful Synchronicity Between Language and Sustainability Dr. Joshua John Jodoin (Dr. J) School of International Studies Kwansei Gakuin University, Japan Abstract. The latest Convention on Climate Change (COP 27) in Egypt failed to deliver a satisfactory deal on loss and damage for the most vulnerable nations. This luke-warm reception is unsurprising as the world fumbles to limit global temperatures to 1.5°C, which was adopted during the 2015 Paris agreement. Moreover, the public (including our students) have become numb to the hype and inaction around important global issues, like climate change. As an antidote to this frustration and apathy, Language Education for Sustainable Development, or LESD, has been envisioned. LESD aims to foster critical awareness, civic engagement, and intercultural communication skills among language learners. LESD has two main aims. First, LESD seeks to support the growth of global citizens that embody Pro-Environmental Behaviors (PBE) and demonstrate awareness of critical global issues. Secondly, LESD seeks to support language learners, who can share their ideas and solutions about these critical issues from their own contexts in meaningful ways across cultural boundaries. The presenter will discuss three major challenges to the education systems in Indonesia and Japan showing how LESD can become a powerful countermeasure. The presenter will also introduce how LESD can be consolidated into the language classroom using the teaching methodology, SCOPE. SCOPE highlights areas where best-practice in Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) and language teaching overlap, such as critical thinking and student- centered approaches. This presentation will be of special interest to educators using the SDGs in their classrooms to promote global citizenship and sustainability through language learning. ICOLLEC Keynote Profile Summary Neen Te) Language Canada, Canada Gonzalo has been the Executive Director of Languages Canada since December 2009 (13 years 8 months) and is based in Ottawa, Canada. Languages Canada is the national representative of over 200 accredited language programs in Canada. Members include French and English programs from universities, colleges, private schools, and non-profit organizations. Many studies reveal that there are a lot of benefits of using digital translation for education such as increasing productivity, lowering the translation costs and many others. However, the challenge of using machine translation needs also considering. Studies show that effective post editing can help mistranslated words or phrases that could change the meaning of a passage in different context. To what extent does a machine translation help to translate a text? This study is intended to reveal the following questions: 1) How do machine translations translate informative texts? 2) How do machine translations translate expressive texts? and 3) How do machine translations translate operative texts? Descriptive qualitative study is conducted using content analysis. The data was collected from 28 undergraduate students and 4 postgraduate students who were required to translate English texts from English to Indonesian manually, then compared to machine translation. From the findings, it appears that different text types have different results of translation. Post editing is suggested to conduct in every end of the translation product. This study also explores how EVT and MV generated from the corpora align with the academic word lst (AWL) proposed by Coxhead. Cospus linguistics was employed as the methodology of this study. A wide range of sensory, language, cognition, and motor regions are involved in phonological working, ‘memory, which is the capacity io temporarily maintain and manipulate the sounds essential for speech and language. This study aims to understand better how phonological working memory functions when learning Japanese double consonants, or sokuon sounds. This study's subject matter included 60 Indonesian students from six universities from varied ethnic origins. The students recorded the identical sentences they read after listening, to the native Japanese speakers’ recordings and aftr filling inthe blanks. 41% of students wrongly identified and produced a double consonant or sokuon. Because they were unable to distinguish double and single consonants, the students’ phonological working memory was unable to recognize and precipitate the double consonant or sokuon sounds, wich resulted in their production without having the distinctive rising intonation of Japanese double consonants. They made sounds of varying lengths, very low frequency, and very low energy density Meanwhile, $7% were able to accurately identify and produce the sokuon. The results show that there are six types of dysphemism in the headlines, which mainly manifest in taboo words. Particularly, this study ims to compare student citation practices across education levels. Five undergraduate theses containing 96.083 ‘words in total and three Master's theses with 90,901 words in total in the field of English language were collected from excellent students, based on their thesis defence results. All papers were first analyzed by using quantitative analysis through descriptive and inferential statistics. A qualitative analysis was conducted to further document the textual evidence of citation use in the students’ papers. The analysis results wll present and discuss three main points: (1) the occurrences of citation forms in each group of papers comparatively; (2) the occurrences of thetorical functions of citation found in the two data sets comparatively; and (3) the textual realization of forms and rhetorical funetions of citations in undergraduate and Master's students” papers.
