PRIMER
The following contains explanations about the various titles created by Type-Moon and
their adaptations. Franchises and their titles are ordered in what I think would be the best when
prioritizing lore and continuity. (aka. do pretty much everything in release order. Read VNs, not
adaptations. Do adaptations just to do something fun after finishing, rather than that being your
first-time experience.) It's mostly my personal opinion and my suggestions are prone to bias. So
really, you can ignore all of it if you want. But if you don't know the differences between
titles or what certain titles are, this might help too.
It goes without saying, but TYPE-MOON has created massive franchises, and more than likely,
you aren’t going to love everything. If you ever want to drop or skip something, it’s entirely within
your right to do so. What’s most important is your own enjoyment factor. TYPE-MOON can
seem monstrous, so this guide was meant to have everything neatly laid out for those left
completely in the dark, but that doesn’t mean you have to follow it word for word.
If you would rather have the original format of the doc, which was originally just download links,
you can get a version of the doc that’s download-link only for easier and more accessible
sharing, rather than info dumping:
Neverland Overdrive - TYPE-MOON Download links
If you absolutely want to experience Fate as soon as possible, my personal recommendation is:
Kara no Kyoukai films
Fate/stay night VN
Fate/hollow ataraxia
Fate/Zero
Watch Kara no Kyoukai so you can be introduced to fundamental concepts in the Nasuverse,
since they can be mentioned in Fate/stay night and in Fate/Zero. Also because Kara no Kyoukai
is short in comparison.
The way I look at it, adapting a 70-90 hour long VN is like adapting a JRPG. There's just too
much lost due to the time constraints of an anime's run-time and you lose the feeling of playing
and being a part of the game itself.
Either hollow ataraxia and Zero is fine following stay night, hollow ataraxia and zero make
references to each other since they both were in development around the same time.
You can do almost every Fate spin-off following Fate/stay night
Preferably Tsukihime after Kara no Kyoukai, but it's a big investment to read a VN and all of the
entries of the series just to get around to an entirely unrelated franchise.

KARA NO KYOUKAI
Kara no Kyoukai
Film Series torrent | Mirror Moon TL archive | Cokesakto TL pdf
Kara no Kyoukai was originally written as a series of individual chapters released
between 1998 and 1999. The chapters would later be collected into two volumes in
2004, which would get an English translation by both Mirror Moon and Cokesakto.
Common consensus has that Mirror Moons' translation is better since they also
translated Tsukihime and Fate/stay night, but it was never completed.
Cokesakto's translation is complete, but often criticized for its rigid and
more literal translation, as well as taking creative liberties with the writing.
Kara no Kyoukai would later be adapted into a film series by ufotable starting
from 2007.
A manga adaptation also began serialization in 2010 by Tenkuu Sphere, and is
currently ongoing with 8 volumes, with an abandoned translation by JS Scans, having
last updated in 2014.
The film series is usually suggested over the novels, due to the novels' generally
poor Cokesakto translation, and Mirror Moon's translation being incomplete.
The film series is praised for its CGI visuals by ufotable, the soundtrack composed
by Yuki Kaijura, as well as adapting every chapter into an individual movie, but
are criticized for a poor adaptation of Chapter 6.
Ultimate Edition
Light Novel | Film Series
Taking place after the end of Kara no Kyoukai, it was originally intended as an
'8th Chapter', but never released as part of the original series.
Mirai Fukuin serves as a collection that includes both a story, constituting
of two parts: 'Möbius Ring', and 'Möbius Link', as well as some short manga
chapters.
Mirai Fukuin wouldn't be released until the start of the film series, releasing
in 2008. Despite this, ufotable would still animate both Möbius Ring and
Möbius Link in the 'Future Gospel' movie, and would adapt the manga segments in
'Future Gospel: Extra Chorus'.
TSUKIHIME
Tsukihime
Visual Novel .rar | Manga adaptation | Anime adaptation
Tsukihime is Type-Moon's first Visual Novel released in 2000, and only really
relates to Kara no Kyoukai thematically, despite both characters having the
same first name and having an ability known as Mystic Eyes of Death Perception.
An anime adaptation was aired in 2003 that shifts focus to try to include a
handful of routes, as well as create some original content, but is heavily
panned for this reason, as well as feeling rushed for its 12 episode run-time.
A manga adaptation that focuses on Arcueid's route, while providing major
details of other routes, began in 2003.
It's nearly unanimous to read the original Visual Novel, as no adaptation
covers Tsukihime in its entirety. The other adaptations focus mostly
on Arcueid's route and hand pick details from the other four routes, effectively
spoiling most of the Visual Novel. However, The manga is held in higher regard than the
anime.
Tsukihime PLUS+DISC
Bonus Disc Torrent
The Tsukihime PLUS+DISC is a type of bonus disc was released in 2001, which
contains several short stories and early concept art.
It's easiest to read this directly after completing Tsukihime as it has the
characters self-aware, directly discussing the events of the game as well as
the development cycle.
Ultimate Edition
Kagetsu Tohya
Visual Novel .rar | Guide
A fan-disk released later in 2001 that has its own original story following
Tsukihime, but that contains plot elements from multiple routes, putting it in
a place where it cannot be a direct continuation of any specific route, leaving
its continuity open.
More or less meant to give more content to the fans without something as
serious as a direct sequel. Focuses more on light-hearted fun with some
development and/or more screen time to the characters, while also adding some new
ones.
It’s heavily advised to play with a guide as it’s possible to lock yourself out of some
Scenes permanently.
'Prologue'
Youtube video
A short story taking place before the start of Tsukihime, focusing on world
building concerning the Types and Arcueid. It was also released in the
Tsukihime - Plus Period artbook.
Despite what the name would imply, I think it's best read having already
completed Tsukihime and then getting a better understanding of what took place
thousands of years before the start of the game, since you're already somewhat
aware of what happened, as well as the terminology featured.
I think the in-game intro works much better as an introduction instead of being
given lore and terms right off the bat.

FATE/STAY NIGHT
Fate/stay night [Realta Nua] (Ultimate Edition)
Ultimate Edition | DEEN Anime | DEEN UBW movie | UBW anime | HF Movie I
HF Movie II | HF Movie III | Manga adaptation | HF Manga adaptation
Released in 2004, Fate/stay night marked Type-Moon's first commercial work.
The VN contains three routes: Fate, with Saber as the main heroine;
Unlimited Blade works with Rin, and Heaven's Feel for Sakura.
Be sure to read them in this order, as it's the official reading order, each
route relying on previous information from the last.
Ultimate Edition
The original version of the game featured H-Scenes and no voice acting.
Realta Nua, a rerelease of Fate/Stay Night, added voice actors and removed H-Scenes.
Realta Nua was originally translated by Mirror Moon but was later edited
by a team at Beast's Lair forums, which corrected some localization mistakes,
and adds the option to select the original OST or Realta Nua's remixes, the
original and the Vita port of Realta Nua Vita's openings, and to turn on or off
H-Scenes.
The Beast's lair patch would be later updated and expanded upon, in a patch called
'Realta Nua Ultimate Edition', adding in tons of original material like voice clips
playing despite the text advancing, being able to hear voices from already seen
dialogue, as well as spires and backgrounds being ripped directly from the vita and
mobile versions, making the game have an overall higher quality.
The Visual Novel would later have an anime adaptation by Studio DEEN in 2006,
with a Fate route focus with minor Unlimited Blade Works elements and some
original content. DEEN would also later adapt the Unlimited Blade Works route
in its entirety into a movie.
Like Tsukihime, the anime adaptations would also be panned.
In 2015, ufotable would produce an anime adaptation of the Unlimited Blade Works
route, and later a movie trilogy of Heaven's Feel
While ufotable's adaptations would be more accurate and placed over Deen's, the
content of the 20-30 hour UBW route is still cut into 10 hours, and Heaven's
Feel cut to a quarter of its original runtime. And being a Visual Novel written
in First Person Perspective, a lot of the inner monologuing from Shirou's
perspective is entirely removed in the anime adaptations.
Fate/hollow ataraxia
Visual Novel torrent
Fate/stay night's 2005 fan-disk that, like Kagetsu Tohya, contains elements from
several routes without following any of them. Also meant more for fun without
being a direct sequel, but like Kagetsu Tohya, expands on the characters and some
of the lore.

Fate/Zero - Heart of Freaks is a short story released in 2008 that covers
Kiritsugu's past
Fate/Zero would eventually have an anime adaptation by ufotable in 2011 that covers
both the main novels, as well as Heart of Freaks.
Watching the anime or reading the LNs are good either way. As a Novel series, it's
much more linear compared to a Visual Novel, as well as shorter, making a 24-episode
run time much more manageable.
FATE/EXTRA
Fate/Extra
PSP .ISO | Game walkthrough | Enemy Patterns | Manga Adaptation
For the first time, TYPE-MOON would be making an RPG for the PSP in 2010.
Fate/Extra alone has little relevance with other titles aside from the original
Fate/stay night, taking place in the year 2030 with a heavy sci-fi setting.
In 2012, both a Sound Drama retelling the events of the game would be released, as
well as a manga adaptation by Robi~na.
Fate/Extra is often criticized for its Rock-Paper-Scissors type gameplay, where
the outcome is the same every playthrough, making it seemingly random, but very
robotic and easy if you have a guide to tell you what the outcomes are.
I'd suggest trying it out yourself first before resorting to something like
watching a playthrough for the story.
NOTES.
Notes. zip
Notes. would be a dystopian short story originally published in 'Angel Voice', a
short anthology of self published works including Notes., Clowick Canaan-Vail, a
oneshot written and drawn by Takeuchi, and a few stand-alone illustrations drawn by
Takashi Hamada.
Both Notes. and Clowick Canaan-Vail would later be re-released in the
Tsukihime - Plus Period artbook.
While written in 1999, I think it pairs best when read next to Tsuki no Sango and
and read as a retrospective, having already read other TYPE-MOON works, as they both take
place in distant futures.
TSUKI NO SANGO
Ultimate Edition
English pdf | Live Reading | Tsuki no Sango PV | Audio CD | Manga adaptation
Written for the Full Moon Recital Hall and read live by Sakamoto Maaya in 2010,
Tsuki no Sango would take place in the year 3000, in the same year, but a separate
timeline from Notes.
A text version, as well as a CD reading, were released. A manga adaptation would
soon follow.
CARNIVAL PHANTASM
TV Series Torrent
A crossover series adapting the Take-Moon gag manga and adding their own skits
into the mix, airing in 2010.
The majority of the gags are from Fate/stay night, Fate/Hollow Ataraxia,
Tsukihime, and Melty Blood, with some Kagetsu Tohya
All other titles listed above have much smaller roles as brief cameos, not lasting
more than a single skit or as a hidden cameo.
The vast majority of Type-Moon properties following Carnival Phantasm may relate
to older Type-Moon properties, but usually don't relate to one another and can be
done in any order, at almost any time. Before or after Carnival Phantasm is fine.
MAHOUTSUKAI NO YORU
Visual Novel with Mcjon01 TL | Chapter 8-8.5 English patch | Hollow Moon TL Homepage
TYPE-MOON's first All-ages Kinetic Novel, released in 2012.
The game was originally partially translated by Mcjon01 at Beast’s Lair forums, but has since
stopped production after translating chapters 1-7. Hollow Moon Translations has begun work
retranslating the game and finishing the untranslated chapters. Currently, they have released
their own chapter 8-8.5 translation that can be played on top of the Mcjon01 release.
Ultimate Edition
never mentioned, it's probably best to invest all of your time into them after
finishing Carnival Phantasm. Especially since Tsuki no Sango, Notes, and Carnival
Phantasm together are shorter than everything related to Fate/Extra.
Fate/Extra CCC (Untranslated)
PSP .ISO (Untranslated) | Iwakura Productions Fate CCC tag | Manga Adaptation
Meant more or less as an alternate route to Fate/Extra, with the same premise
and setting, but a different unfolding of events. Released for the PSP in 2013.
A fan translation project is in development by Iwakura Productions
Fate/Extra CCC has an ongoing manga adaptation, also by Robi~na.
Fate/Extella

FATE/APOCRYPHA
NanoDesu Translation Homepage | Anime adaptation torrent
Novel series written by Yuuichirou Higashide and supervised by Nasu, with
the Holy Grail War having two teams of 7 servants and masters competing for the
Grail.
The series originally began as an MMO, but the idea was scrapped and the game
was turned into a light novel series.
Ultimate Edition
Fate/Apocrypha - Unbirth was a short story published in TYPE-MOON Ace 7, intended
to preview what would be Fate/Apocrypha.
Since Fate/Apocrypha - Unbirth was written before Fate/Apocrypha was released,
Fate/Apocrypha - Zugwang was released in Type Moon Ace 10 to accompany Unbirth
and clear up some of the details.
The manga is often noted to have a darker overall tone, as well as nowhere near
the level of fanservice that's shown in the anime. The anime does tone the fan
service down more and more as the series progresses and becomes more serious.

A novel series by Ryohgo Narita, based around a false Grail War in which the
definition of a hero has been lost, causing normally impossible servants to be
summoned, able to participate in the war.
The novels are still ongoing, starting from 2015, and currently at four volumes,
all translated by OtherSideofSky.
Ultimate Edition
Features characters from Fate/stay night, Fate/Zero, and Fate/hollow ataraxia, like
unlimited codes.
It would later get a sequel, Fate/Tiger Colosseum Upper, also Japanese only and
exclusively on the PSP. Neither games have any translation.
Fatal+Fake series
Fatal+Fake | Crucis Fatal/Fake
Fate Fatal/Fake is a doujin 3D fighter developed by Light's.
It's closer to Fate/unlimited codes in style and made entirely of original assets
and models.
Fatal/Fake is usually dismissed over it's sequel, Crucis Fatal/Fake.
Unique to Crucis Fatal+Fake is the ability to select both the servant and master
you fight as, and play as both. As well as every servant and master being present.
The game would later be continued by a community mod, changing mostly character
portraits and the in-game soundtrack.
Both the original version and the modded community version are included in the .rar

Hana no Miyako
Ultimate Edition
Hana no Miyako mangadex link | Hana no Miyako Legends mangadex link
A short manga series focused on Arima Miyako and set in its own continuity,
borrowing and altering characters from Fate/stay night and Tsukihime.
A lot of liberties are taken for the manga, most famously, Nanaya being an
orange haired school girl and friends with Miyako.
Written by the same author as the Melty Blood manga series, it ran for two
volumes before getting canceled, and then continuing it as a Doujin series
called Hana no Miyako Legends.
