Section 4/5: Response Writing (Overview)

Time: ~1 hr. You will write a response to 2 prompts - 1 creative and 1 research based.

Now that you know what a good response should look like, it’s time to create one from
scratch.

Remember: AI-Assisted Writers or Large Language Models are not permitted throughout
the course and any identification of such assistance will result in immediate failure of the
screening process.

What:
Response Writing entails constructing a thorough, original, and relevant answer to a
prompt. Knowing how to write high-quality responses is an essential skill to succeeding in
most task types. There are many forms which a Response Writing task may take,
including:

 Generation
 Summarization
 Classification
 Categorization
 Brainstorming.

Depending on the project and/or specific prompt, some of these tasks may require
conducting outside research and/or citing sources.

Why:
Large language models will be trained on your responses. The main corpus of these
models’ training data is information scraped from the internet, but there is a lot of
rampant misinformation and/or harmful content present on the internet. Your work here
will contribute to ensuring that models provide helpful, accurate, and harmless responses
to their users.

How:
You are going to be given various prompts and guidelines for each prompt. Your job is to
write responses to those prompts according to the writing criteria provided. Recall the
rubric.
