Sandal wood is a tree of rarity w
very few countries in the world. It has a unique place
among trees because of its fragrance and golden hue.
Though sandal wood grows in many parts of the
country, the one that grows in Karnataka is of the be
quality. That is why our state is known as the land of
sandal wood. Karnataka state is the sandal state of
the country.

hilly as well as plain regions of our state

Hassan, Mysore, Chamarajanagara,
Shimoga, Belgaum, Uttara Kannada,
Dharwad, Kolar, Chitradurga and even
in Bidar Districts
Sandal wood is used in making
perfumes, soaps and medicines.
The art and carvings of sandal wood
have a lot of demand in the international
market. Fragrant sandal wood is
inevitable in the preparation of incense
sticks. So the demand for sandal wood
has been risingTil recently sandal trees growing anywhere in Private premises, Government or non=
Government places, Organizations, Prayer halls, muths, etc, were considered fo be
Government property. The landlords of these places where sandal trees grew were paid in
the form of bonus and there were several restrictions to dispose off the sandal trees that grew
in private lands. Owing to this, farmers and the owners of private lands were not showing
interest in growing sandal wood,
The State Government has taken up several measures to encourage farmers to grow itn
huge quantities. Sandal tree which is the the Pride of Karnataka, and as a first step of
promoting cultivation of sandal wood, the Government lifted the restrictions on cultivation
and selling of sandal wood

Appayyappa Torangatti, a retired teacher from
Katakola, village in the jurisdiction of
forest range in Belagavi district, has cultivated
sandal plants in 10 acres. He had planted 1200
saplings two and a half years ago and as they
grew well, he planted another 4500 more saplings
last year. He has cultivated mango trees as °
intermediate trees and the mango yield has
already begun.
He has plans to form a sandal nursery and sell
the saplings. He has raised a high compound Well
and grown the traditional hedge-fence. He has
made arrangement to fix a solar electric fence
