DATE: 28th June, 2023

During the late 19th century, Igboland was made part of the Southern Nigeria
Protectorate of the British Empire and amalgamated into modern day Nigeria in 1914. Nigeria
got independence in 1960. Igboland was involved in its biggest war during Biafra’s movement
for secession.

We have heard much speculation about the origins of the Igbo people which are largely
unknown.

The Igbo homeland is divided into two unequal sections by the Niger River – an eastern
(which is the larger of the two) and a western section. And Igbo people is one of the biggest
ethnic groups in Africa.

Igbo Civilization

The Igbo people are descended from the name called ERI, a divine figure who, according
to Igbo folklore was sent from heaven to begin civilization. And Eri as one of the sons of Gods.
And the first Igbo State in Nigeria is Nsukka. Awka-Orlu axis is said to be the oldest area of igbo
settlement and therefore, the homeland of the Igbo.

Igbo are also called Ibo, people living chiefly in South Eastern Nigeria who speak Igbo, a
language of the Benue Congo people branch of the Niger-Congo language family.

And the father of the Igbo people is Eri-Eri was the god-like founder of what is today
Nigeria and is believed to have settled the region around 948. And the name Igbo was descended
from Eri. Kingdom of Nri was the oldest in Igboland and is about 900AD in North Central. The
British brought Igbo language to life. The first Igbo king was Eze Mmaku in 1498 – 1529. And
the mother of Igbos name is ANI. Igbo is the oldest in Nigeria now. The Igbo have history than
the Yoruba nation.

And the big god in Igbo is “Okechi” which means the great God.
