HOSPITAL COMM1TTELS

INFECTION COMMITTEE

INTRODUCTION
Antibiotics arc most widely prescribed tonus of anti infective drugs therapy in hospital .
However many at a time arc too expensive and inappropriate use may cause resistant strains
of organisms which then gives rise to problems in infection control in hospitals.
,

There are several reports and studies, shows in appropriate use of antibiotics in teaching
hospitals of even developed countries, as 41-91% of all antibiotics prescribed here are
inappropriate.

* A slight heller picture can be seen in medical and pediatric wards.

* A worse situation was seen in surgical and gynecology ward.

Unnecessary use of antibiotics for treatment seems to be the common reason , so also its
wrong duration* unreasonable logic of prophylaxis and poor selection of drug* are other
reasons of antibiotic misuse, for the use of antibiotics some of the acceptable indications are ;

* Upper: lower RTI .

* Gtenito Urn, skin and tissue infection ,
* Septicemia , surgical prophylaxis .
,

* High post-operative infection, especially after “mersjr surgery .

Although antibiotic overuse in hospitals was well accepted, each doctor has its own notions
about the use of antibiotics, which further aggravate their overuse.

.
1 A good antibiotic policy has to framed by the hospital infection committee with
following elements:
• Antibiotics should be used only for acceptable indication of possible pathogens
should be identified and eukure sensitivity should be sought .

* Choice of antibiotic should be based on factors such as spectrum, known (or)
suspected causative organism safety cost and ease of use .
* Adequate dose and duration of treatment is essential for all antibiotic therapy
,

* Oral therapy is preferred over parenteral wherever possible .

2. Review of antibiotic usage periodically can be done by the antibiotic review ( AUR )
3. Periodically meetings should be conducted on AUR.
4. Ultimately this helps the infection control programmes in the hospital .
