These patterns, coupled with free online video and blog tutorials created by Momo, will help you construct your very own cosplays, fashion apparel, accessories, props, and more! Below are some useful vocabulary terms that may be used in this project and/or in the tutorials. Provided on the next page is a Symbols and Markings Guide to explain various features on these patterns, since they differ from commercial patterns. For assembly videos, tutorial blogs, and other supplementary materials, visit: www.momokarinyo.com/patternresources Ifyou have any questions or comments or wish to share your projects with Momo, reach her at info@momokarinyo.com Helpful Vocabulary Grain Line: In these patterns the grain ine refers to the lengthwise grain ofthe fabric. Unless otherwise indicated, it should follow the length ofthe fabric and be parallel to the selvage edge. ‘Additionally, crosswise grain is perpendicular and spans the width of the fabric. A diagonal grain line is referred to as bias. True bias lays at the 45° angle- exactly half way between lengthwise and crosswise grain, Interfacing: Refers toa stabilizer used to give structute to fabrics. Comes in various weights and can be sew-in or fusible. Fusible Interfacing: Refers to a type of interfacing that can be applied directly to the wrong side ofa fabric through the application of heat, such as an iron. Fusible interfacing can be one-sided or double-sided. In these patterns, unless otherwise indicated, use one-sided fusible interfacing. Follow the application directions that comes with your interfacing for best results. Always test ina discreet area or on scrap material to prevent accidental damage. Face: Refers to the right side of the fabric, or the side of the fabric that will be visible from the outside, Batting: A type of fill material used to add softness, volume, and warmth to textile pieces such as in quilts or pillows. Comes in sheets or loose material, and can be natural or synthetic fibers. Loose batting may also be referred to as stuffing. ‘Seam Allowance: The distance between the edge of the fabric and the stitch line. This distance ensures that the stitch has ample space to not be easily ripped out. In these patterns, unless otherwise indicated, sew at 1/4 in or 0.6 cm from the edge. Selvage: The finished edge of fabrics that runs the length of the material. Often identifiable by a difference in color, texture, tr the appearance of text or small puncture holes, The selvage edge is useful for finding the grainline of a fabric. Baste: A large straight stitch thatis not always intended to be a final, secure stitch. Itcan be used to hold things in place more effectively than pins, or can be used for other techniques such as gathering, Baste stitches are generally not intended to be seen on the outside of a finished garment. A baste stitch can be done by hand sewing or machine. Slip Stitch: A type of hidden stitch created by traveling through the unseen portion of a piece and making small stitches on the visible parts such that the stitch can be barely noticed. Slip stitches can be used to close holes, finish hem lines, affix matetials to each other, and more. It is generally used as a finishing stitch, and thus should be secured accordingly. Tack: A type of stitch made to hold fabric in place, or to attach a small feature to fabric, such as a small bow or accessory. This stitch is commonly relegated to one point, or a small area, ©2021 Momo Karifio. All rights reserved. These symbols and lines are explained below. Symbols and Markings Guide <_— Cut on Fold Grain Line Pattern pieces with this feature are not the whole pattern, only ha. This means you should fold your fabric ove itself, wide enough to fitthe pattern on both sides. Align the fold ofthe fabric with the Cut on Fold edge ofthe patter, and cut through both fabric layers Cut Line When cutting, align this line parallel to the selvage or the lengthwise grain of your material Cut the pattern along these edges. This is not always the same cut line for the fabric, such as"Cut on Fold” lines or similar cases. Be sure to follow pattern assembly instructions accordingly. SoS oe Stitch Line © Drill Hole Sew your fabric along these lines, preferably with a sewing machine, Use stitch length 3 (mm) unless ‘otherwise indicated, such as for baste stitching. A small mark made with tailor’s chalk, or a small aw! puncture, used to align difficult seam corners, as well as indicate placement of notions or decor, such as snaps End Stitch Be sure to end stitches at these points when they appear. >> Relief Notch When these appear, a small notch or clip in the fabric is requited to relieve tension on an area of stress. Match Circles After cutting out the paper pattern pieces, match and align these circles with their corresponding letters. For example, match A to A, and B to B, and so on. For this pattern, “Match Circle F”can be matched with any option of F1 through F7, such as F2, F3, etc. for your choice of one of seven customizeable bow tails. Tape pieces together with clear office or gift wrap tape to complete the pattern pieces. When taping, place the pieces such that the paper edges perfectly touch and do not overlap each other. ©2021 Momo Karifio. Allrights reserved.
