Chi Square Test

In Class Activity

1. A poker-dealing machine is supposed to deal cards at random, as if from an infinite deck.

In a test, you counted 1600 cards, and observed the following:

Spades 404

Hearts 420

Diamonds 400

Clubs

376

Could it be that the suits are equally likely?

Or are these discrepancies too much to be random?

Answer:

chi-squared = (observed - expected)^2/ expected We can calculate the chi-squared statistic for each suit
and sum them together.

chi-squared_total = (404-400)^2/ 400+ (420-400)^2/400+ (400- 400)^2 / 400+ (376-400)^2/400

= 12.68

The critical value for a chi-squared test with three degrees of freedom and a significance level of 0.05 is
7.815. If the chi-squared statistic is greater than the critical value, we reject the null hypothesis and
conclude that the suits are not equally likely.

In this case, the chi-squared statistic (12.68) is greater than the critical value (7.815), so we reject the null
hypothesis and conclude that the suits in the poker-dealing machine are not equally likely.

Therefore, the answer to the question is Yes, the discrepancies are too much to be random.
