— Adverbs of manner answer the question ‘How’. They give us more information about a verb. They tell us how something happens. They are usually formed by adding -Iy at the end of an adjective. Examples: (a) anxious — anxiously (b) beautiful — beautifully (c) quiet - quietly (d) patient — patiently (e) hard — hardly (f) narrow — narrowly (g) shy — shyly (h) careful — carefully However, some do not follow this rule. (a) For adjectives ending in -le and preceded by a consonant, the letter -e is changed to -y. Examples: simple — simply favourable — favourably Note: For the word whole, the letter -e is changed to -ly to form wholly. (b) For adjectives ending in -ll, only -y is added. Examples: full - fully dull - dully (c) For adjectives ending in -y and preceded by consonant, the letter -y tg dropped and -ily is added. ¢ Examples: 3 Bane ert easy — easily Em busily nOpRH = ll Note: 3 For shy and sly, -ly is added at the end to form slyly ¢ a shily: (d) For adjectives ending in -y and preceded by a vowel, Sy ‘is added, Examples: coy — coyly grey — greyly (e) For adjectives ending in -lc, -ally is added.
