 *Activity 3:
Skill-building Activities Identify three issues or problems which may arise
in identifying quality children’s literature to teach to students. Think also
of a possible solution to these issues and problems.
 Violence
 Sexism
 Racism

Possible Solutions:

1. Evaluate as children’s literature: well-written, good plot, good characterization, readable. The
book should be judge for its overall effect. Children must find the book acceptable in terms of
readability
2. Characters must not be stereotyped. They must be people in their own right, not manipulated to
prove a point. Readers should be lead to think of the characters as individuals rather than Jews,
Negroes, or Warays, Tagalogs, etc.
3. Illustration must be acceptable and true both artistically and culturally.
