Tutorial 1
IRRIGATION AND METHODS OF IRRIGATION
& DUTY-DELTA RELATION
1. Give the detail introduction to Irrigation.

2. Discuss in about different methods of Irrigation.

3. What is duty and delta? Explain the relation between duty and delta.

4. A crop requires 850 mm of water for a base period of 110 days. Find the duty of
water.

5. Water is released at the rate of 14 cumec at the head of a canal. If the duty at the
field is 1300 hactares/cumec and loss of water in transit is 25%, find the area of
the land that can be irrigated.

6. If wheat requires about 8 cm of water after every 28 days, and the base period for
wheat is 130 days, find out the value of delta for wheat.

7. A water course commands an irrigated area 1000 ha. The intensity of irrigation of
rice in this area is 70%. The transplantation of rice crop takes 15 days and during
the transplantation period the total depth of water required by the crop on the field
is 500 mm. During the transplantation period, the useful rain falling on the field is
120 mm. Find the duty of irrigation water for the crop on the field during
transplantation, at the head of the field and at the head of the water course
assuming losses of water to be 20% in the water course. Also calculate the
discharge required in the water course.

8. Details of cropping pattern of an irrigated command area are shown in the

following table. Calculate the discharge required in feeding canal based on
average demand of the crop water requirement. Also calculate total storage
required in the reservoir. Assume 15% conveyance losses in canals and 10%
evaporation loss in the reservoir.

Base period Duty at field Crop area

Rice Kharif 120 1600 1500
Wheat Rabi 120 850 1700
Sugar Cane Perennial 360 900 1100
