SECTION – A
I. Answer any FOUR out of SIX questions each not exceeding 200 words (4X5 = 20)
1. These are the blessings promis'd to the Jews,
And herein was old Abraham's happiness:
What more may heaven do for earthly man
Than thus to pour out plenty in their laps.
2. So Orpheus did for his owne bride,
So I unto my selfe alone will sing,
The woods shall to me answer and my Echo ring.
3. My gold, my gold, and all my wealth is gone!--
You partial heavens, have I deserv'd this plague?
What, will you thus oppose me, luckless stars,
To make me desperate in my poverty?
4. Suspicions that the mind of itself gathers, are but buzzes; but suspicions that are
artificially nourished, and put into men's heads, by the tales and whisperings of others,
have stings.
5. Therefore it is good for princes, if they use ambitious men, to handle it, so as they be still
progressive and not retrograde; which, because it cannot be without inconvenience, it is
good not to use such natures at all.
6. Seek not proud riches, but such as thou mayest get justly, use soberly, distribute
cheerfully, and leave contentedly. Yet have no abstract nor friarly contempt of them.

SECTION – B
II. Answer any TWO out of FOUR questions each not exceeding 500 words (2X15 = 30)
7. “Chaucer was both a mediaevalist and a modern.” Discuss with reference to his Prologue
to the Canterbery Tales.
8. Discuss the features of Sonnet with reference to the sonnets prescribed for you.
9. Discuss the problem of anti-Semitism as portrayed in The Jew of Malta by Marlowe.
10. Discuss Bacon’s literary style.
