Relationship between tolerances of size,
form, and parallelism
Envelope requirement without individual indication on the drawing
Zusammenhang 2wischen Ma®-, Form- und Paralloitite- This standard, together with
toleranzen; Kalbedingung ohne Zelchnungseintragung DIN ISO 1101, March 1985 edition,
supersedes
DIN 7184 Part 1, May 1972 edition.
In keeping with current practice in standards published by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), @ comma
‘has boon used throughout as the decimal marker.
1 Scope and field of application
‘The specifications given in this standard with regard to the relationship between tolerances of size, form and parallelism
‘apply te drawinge in which no reference is made in or close to the drawing ttle block to their being toleranced In accord
ance with ISO 8016 (or with its predecessor, DIN 2300).
The purpose of this standard is to clarity the corresponding specications previously given in DIN 7184 Part 1. Its the
national standard referred to in subciause 7.2 of ISO 8015 (Issued as a DIN ISO Standard in July 1986), which lays down
that the envelope requirement for single features is the norm and therefore does not need to be separately specified on
the drawing,
2 Envelope requirement without indication on the drawing
In the case of drawings based on DIN Standards on tolerances and fits and with no specifications to the contrary (0.
reference to ISO 8016), the envelope requirement (see figure 1) shall apply for all features without its being separately
Indicated on the drawing.
‘hie envelope requirement oorreaponds to the envelope requirement specified in subclause 6.1 of SO 8015 which states
that, for a single feature, Le. a cylindrica! surface ora feature established by two parallel plane surfaces, the envelope of
Perfect form at maximum material size of the feature shall not be violates.
‘That means that the deviations of form and the doviations from parallelism of opposing plane surfaces are controlled by
the dimensional tolerance, unless other more specific tolerances are indicated for the features conoerned by means of
the symbols specified in SO 1101, the values of these tolerances being greater than that of the dimensional tolerance of
the feature,

Amendments
The following amendments have been made In comparison with the May 1972 edition of DIN 7184 Part 1
‘Specttications with regard to the relationship between tolerances of size, form and position have been restricted to single
features, All other specifications of DIN 7184 Part 1 that reproduce specifications given in ISO 1101-1984 have now been
Included in the equivalent German version of that standard, DIN ISO 110%
Explanatory notes
DIN 7184 Part 1, though largely based on |SO/R 1101, deviated trom that Recommendation ints including a specication to
tha effect that clmensicnal tolerances also control the deviations of form and position (except for the deviations from
symmetry, coaxiallty and run-out, and except where reference is made to particular specifications)
(Owing to its differant interpretation in cifferent countries, the relationship between tolerances of size, orm and position was
Inneed of clarification. That prompted the publication of SO 8015-1986, in which the “principle of independency” is defined
{8 a fundamental tolerancing principle
Nevertheless, the envelope requirement without indication on the drawing continues tobe applied, whichis heresson or the
publication of the present standard, DIN 7167.
It@oviatos from the specifications previously given in DIN 7184 Part 1 as regards the relationship between the deviations trom
rectangulerity and the dimensional tolerances. Up torow, the rule was that deviations from rectangularty shouldile within the
dimensional thleraneas, maasuted in the ractanguiar sysiem of coordinates. In industrial practice, however, ths limitation
was and is hardly ever observed, since there is seldom a functional requirement for it
‘Much the same statement is made in DIN 7168 Part 2. However, when the standard is next revised, to bring tino line with the
corresponding international standard on general geometrical tolerances (ISO 2765 Part 2, at prosent atthe stage of dratt),
general tolerances will be specified for rectangularity independently of the dimensional tolerances.
The specification that the dimensional tolerances also include the deviations trom rectangularity was a departure trom tne
specifications of ISO 1101 that was only valid in the Federal Republic of Germany. it has now been withdrawn because it
contradicts the principle of independency as set out in ISO 8018. According to the definition of the envelope requirement in
180 8015, the dimensional tolerance can only control the form deviations of a feature, the geometry of which can be exact'y
deserlbed by a single incieation an the drawing (cylinder, or to parallel plane surfaces).Oniy those features which satisfy this
definition can be checked In respect of thoir maintaining the maximum material limits of size with the aid of GO gauge in
accordance with Taylor's principle (see DIN 7150 Part 2)
{As aula, no indications are entered on drawings which have been or willbe prepared on the basis of the relationship between
tolerances of size, form and parallelism as presented inthis standard. However, to avoid misunderstandings occurring when
drawings are intonded for use in differant countries, a reference may, I nacessary, ba mado to this standard in arclosatotne
drawing ttle block, as folows:
