HOW IT STARTED

- It's been held since 1996


- Started by two college students
- It now reaches hundreds of thousands of
students each year

- Today it has expanded into all 50 states of


the USA; New Zealand, Singapore, Russia
and more countries
WHAT IS
DAY OF SILENCE?
MY SILENCE, MY STORY.

- A day of action to raise awareness to the


harassment that LGBTQ students face

- Students take a day-long vow of silence to


represent the silencing of LGBTQ students

- Done annually, on the second Friday in April


- Organized by GLSEN
WHAT IS GLSEN?

- Works to support and protect LGBTQ


students

- Organizes GSAs, ally week and more


- Assists students in legal actions
- Conducts research and experiments and
publishes statistics

- Was founded by a group of teachers


WHAT IS DONE ON
DAY OF SILENCE?

- Graphics are shared to tell everyone the


problems LGBTQ students face

- Non-LGBTQ students come together with


LGBTQ students to share their solidarity

- LGBTQ students create videos, poems, art,


t-shirts or more on the topic, which are also
shared on GLSEN's website

WHY IS IT
IMPORTANT?

- It brings everyone together


- It empowers students, especially LGBTQ
students

- It sparks solidarity for LGBTQ people


- It makes LGBTQ people realize how many
allies there are

- It's gives people a chance to come out as


LGBTQ
