Write a speech to give to an audience of young people about what they need to consider

when taking part in an extreme sport.

- evaluate the benefits and risks outlined in both texts

- Give your own view, based on what you have read, about whether participating in an
extreme sport is worthwhile.

Hello, I’m going to be talking about extreme sports and how they can influence us. Extreme
sports are drawing much attention in recent years mostly because of social media. Ice
climbing, BMX riding, cliff driving and skateboarding exhilarate many young people and
make them want to join extreme sports.

Besides all the fun and thrills, they actually benefit you mentally by giving you more
confidence in yourself. You feel like you can do anything because you already achieved
something that most people hesitate to.
Many studies have proven that extreme sports encourage people to overcome their fears by
getting used to being put in high-pressure situations. This helps them not to get so strained
in real life. For instance, one might not feel so nervous in major exams or job interviews.
Apart from staying chill, it also makes you less sensitive to psychological pressure. Training
your mentality with extreme sports can be helpful in preventing mental illness like depression
or anxiety.

However, those sports are addictive as you find it entertaining due to the intense adrenaline
rush. You would get excited at the first time, but you won’t be satisfied after a few more
times. Then you’ll be looking for bigger thrills, in other words, higher risks. Extreme sports
carry a significant risk of death or serious injuries. Even if you don’t make any mistakes,
you’re still not completely away from getting injuries. There always can be unexpected
conditions that you can’t control. Unlike what I said before, the experience itself could be
traumatic when the tension is too high. In severe cases, one might struggle from any similar
situation in actuality.

Extreme sports are of course not worth your life. You can still benefit from them without any
possibilities of getting trauma or injury if you know your inclination and mental state.
Someone who tends to be more sensitive than others can work it out with little thrill using
how extreme sports make people become mentally healthier. When it’s the other case,
however, I do not recommend starting extreme sports in the first place. The level of tension
that works for someone who has a relatively dull sense can lead to high probability of
danger.

I would not dichotomically say if participating in extreme sports is worthwhile or not. The
important thing is to understand how they affect us and to know how to use them right.
