INTRODUCTION

Short poem by Adrienne Rich called Aunt

Jennifer’s Tigers consists only of three stanzas
but it tells the entire story of aunt Jennifer’s life.
Hard life of women in male-oriented society is
the main theme of the poem. The author does
not express her ideas directly but makes the
readers to understand her through allusions
and symbols.
Bright images and deep symbolism help readers
to get the author’s message. The author creates
a picture of life of aunt Jennifer. There are
several places in the poem which give allusion
that Aunt Jennifer is unhappily married and that
she is oppressed by her husband. In the end of
the second stanza Rich writes: “The massive
weight of Uncle’s wedding band

WOMEN
EMPOWERMENT
Women's empowerment (or female empowerment)
may be defined in several ways, including accepting
women's viewpoints, making an effort to seek them
and raising the status of women through education,
awareness, literacy, and training. Women's
empowerment equips and allows women to make
life-determining decisions through the different
societal problems. They may have the opportunity
to re-define gender roles or other such roles, which
allow them more freedom to pursue desired goals.
Women's empowerment has become a significant
topic of discussion in development and economics.
Economic empowerment allows women to control
and benefit from resources, assets, and income. It
also aids the ability to manage risk and improve
women's well-being. It can result in approaches to
support trivialized genders in a particular political or
social context. While often interchangeably used,
the more comprehensive concept of gender
empowerment concerns people of any gender,
stressing the distinction between biological and
gender as a role. Women empowerment helps
boost women's status through literacy, education
training and awareness creation. Furthermore,
women's empowerment refers to women's ability
to make strategic life choices that were previously
denied them.
PROBLEMS
FACED
BY WOMEN
India is a country where women are given
the status of a goddess. However, the
problems they have to face just show the
opposite of this concept. On hand they
worship them as goddesses and on the
other, they abuse them endlessly and
consider them inferior. India women always
had some problem or the other to face in
society. People evolved and so did the
problems, they did not go away but
changed from one to another. We need to
realize these problems and act on them fast
to help our country thrive.

When in the early days, there were severe

issues like the Sati system, no widow
remarriage, devadasi system and more.
While most of them are not prevalent now,
there are new issues that women face. They
may be not the same but they are still as
severe as the early ones. They hinder the
growth of a country and make the women
feel inferior.

Firstly, violence against women is a very

grave issue faced by women in India. It is
happening almost every day in various
forms. People turn a blind eye to it instead
of doing something. Domestic violence
happens more often than you think. Further,
there isalso dowry-related harassment,
marital rape, genital mutilation and more.
Next up, we also have the issues of
genderdiscrimination. Women are not
considered equal to men. They face
discrimination in almost every place,
whether at the workplace or at home. Even
the little girls become a victim of this
discrimination. The patriarchy dictates a
woman’s life unjustly.
Similarities
between Aunt
Jennifer and
Victimized
Women
The different portrayals of women in the
texts 'Aunt Jennifer's Tigers', 'Going Places',
'Lost Spring',
and 'My Mother at Sixty-six' , offer insights
into the experiences of women in society.
You have been asked to address your peers
and share-
→ the ways these portrayals highlight the
diversity of the female experience.
→ the importance of understanding each
individual woman's challenges and
experiences.
Compose this draft, with reference to any
three of these prescribed texts. listed
above.
You may begin this way:
Good morning, everyone.
As I analyzed the allotted texts...
You may end this way.
Role of Society in
Women
Empowerment
Civil society organisations (CSOs) or the
third sector play an important role in the
welfare and development of people. Civil
society organisations are keen observers of
people’s needs. Not only do they raise the
concerns of people but they also monitor
the state’s responses to people’s needs. A
role of civil society organisations that is the
most unrecognised is their demonstration
of innovative approaches towards
development-related issues. Based on
some successful innovations, the state can
formulate larger policies. Thus, CSOs have
been recognised as the change-makers of
the society.

As women comprise half of the total

population, without their participation and
contribution, balanced and sustainable
development is impossible. Therefore, it is
crucial to address women’s issues and
involve them in the development process,
which is one of the major contributions of
civil society organisations. The approach
that women should be participants in their
development process and not just passive
recipients of development programmes
has emerged through the work done for
women’s empowerment. The third sector
has shown a successful demonstration of
women’s participation in development
processes.
Steps Necessary to
enhance Women
Empowerment

1. Boost her self-esteem

You will see the magic happening when
you encourage women/ girls to put forth
their opinions instead of telling them to
shut up. From their childhood, girls are
given a picture of a so-called 'perfect girl'.
They are told to be quiet, calm, modest,
and whatnot, in short, we can say that
women are supposed to be people-
pleasers. And growing up, they know these
are wrong but they are afraid to express
themselves because there is a picture of
the perfect girl in her subconscious mind.

So, motivate the women around you, and

make them feel special and strong.
Encourage your friends to speak up, make
sure they know the value of their opinions
so that they’re never scared to use their
voice. Celebrate her self-expression from a
young age. There’s no “right way” for girls
to dress or speak. And whenever you hear
your friend start to explain her actions,
after listening for a few minutes, gently
remind her that 'just because you want to'
is a sufficient reason.
2. Shut down the negativity:
Lift women by taking a stand against
negative comments online, at the office, in
school, and wherever you go. Combat
negativity by promoting body positivity,
intelligence, and authenticity. Don’t be
afraid to shut down negativity directly and
honestly. Appreciate them for the talents
they have got, accept them the way they
are. Don't try to change them by bullying
or trolling for their skin color, weight,
height, or anything. Everyone is beautiful
in their way, and it is very disgusting to use
the word 'ugly' to define someone's
appearance.

Recognize the unconscious biases you

might have against other women based on
their race, age, sexual orientation, gender
expression, physical abilities, body type,
and socioeconomic background. Uplift the
voices of women of color in your field who
are facing additional biases in the
workplace.

3. Support Women-Run Businesses:

We are well aware of the challenges faced
by women entrepreneurs. Financing
female entrepreneurs often lack access to
financial and human capital, which
impedes business growth. Not only that,
many women with sufficient skills to start
a business give up on their dreams because
of the obstacles they face. The role of
women as business owners is gradually
increasing all over the world. The number
of women entrepreneurs is increasing.
However, their power in use and control
over the household and business-related
resources are still limited.

In 2012, the World Economic Forum

identified women entrepreneurs as “the
way forward”. Yet, despite this, women
entrepreneurs still struggle to take their
rightful place in economic life. Even though
more and more women are starting
businesses globally, they still manage
fewer businesses than men and run
businesses in less profitable sectors that
grow more slowly and are ultimately more
likely to fail.Supporting their business gives
them a sense of security.
4. By giving proper education:

The only way a society or nation can move

forward and aspire to economic growth
and development is not just through girls
education but especially among women
citizens. It enables them to respond to
challenges, confront their traditional role,
and change their life. Education educates a
person and helps her realize that she is a
vital part of society. Occupational
achievement, self-awareness, and
satisfaction are among the many things
that will be ensured by an effective girl's
education. It gives them the power to
make their own decisions, stand up for
their rights, and say NO to harmful
traditional practices.

Educating the world’s women and girls is

clearly the key to transforming the cyclical
nature of poverty into a cycle of
prosperity.

5. Giving job opportunities:Studies have

reported that raising female employment
to male levels can directly impact GDP
growth rates, increasing it by 34% in some
countries. Countries’ productivity can
increase by as much as 25 % if
discriminatory barriers against women are
removed. The lack of safe working
conditions, social security benefits, and a
fair wage induce women to opt-out of
employment—unless critical for their basic
sustenance

Women’s employment is observed as a

prominent tool for women’s
empowerment. Participation in the labor
market is an effective strategy to
strengthen women’s condition inside as
well as outside the home. Women
Employment and income-generating
activities improve the economic position of
women, which then leads to a good
treatment .
