Introduciton

Who does not know Popeye? Popeye is fictional character that first appeared in
the comic strip on January 17, 1929 created by Elzie Crisler Segar, and then came
a comic titled Popeye, this character is well known troughout the world, especially
for children, they must know about Popeye, by displaying a character works as a
sailor who is identical to his pipe and also a large foerarm muscle, and he will
have superhuman strenght when he eats spinach, this character is popular because
some poeple think that Popeye is a hreo for them, therefore Popeye has a lot of
impact for them in real life, because of the popularity, rhere are several films and
games that were adapted from the Popeye comic series. Lots of Popeye fans, this
creates a new trend and culture, the appearance of Popeye’s character influences
how people live their daily lives, here are some things that arise because of
Popeye. (Lotha, 2011)

Popeye is a character that is identical to spinach, this character will get stronger
and like having super powers when he eats spinach, many parents use this to
persuade their children, when their children see Popeye they will be affected, they
think if they eat spinach they will be strong like Popeye, therefore the number of
children who consume vegetables increases ,it has brought positive and good
changes. Besides increasing the number of children who eat vegetables because of
Popeye there are many vegetable products that use the name of Popeye.

The emergence of Popeye brought a big change to the society, especially in

children who at first do not like to eat vegetables to like to eat vegetables, children
are easily influenced by what they see, especially with what they like, for example
Popeye, they might consider Popeye as their hero, of course they will try to
imitate what their role models do, they want to be like him, and fortunately
Popeye has a positive impact, by producing this positive impact parents take
advantage of that moment to persuade their children to eat vegetables, arguing that
if they eat vegetables they will become like Popeye, become strong and can help
the weak, get encouragement from parents, and also their desire to be like Popeye
finally makes them eat vegetables.

In 2010 there was a study in Bangkok, Thailand that examined the amount of fruit
and vegetable consumption in children aged 4 to 5 years, and as a result they
experienced an increase in eating fruits and vegetables after seeing Popeye, even
sales of spinach in America increased by 33%, like Popeye says if you want to be
strong you have to eat spinach, spinach does contain a lot of nutrients and
vitamins such as vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin B complex and so on, so what
Popeye says here is not wrong, therefore many researchers are researching
spinach since Popeye's emergence, one of them examined whether spinach can
help develop muscles, and the results turned out to be possible, so because this is
what causes increased consumption of vegetables, especially spinach, and
everyone agrees on this. (Sirikulchayanonta, 2010)

Discussion

In the 1930's, America was mired in the Great Depression after a major fall in
stock prices and became worldwide news with the stock market crash of October
29, 1929 . The U.S. government was looking for a way to promote iron-rich
spinach as a meat substitute. To help spread the word, they decided to hire one of
America's favorite celebrities, Popeye the Sailor Man. (Cellania, 2015)

This is where I think Popeye has a large enough role to help a little the problem of
major depression that befell America and afflict the whole world, after the great
depression ended there emerged World War 2, in this period the supply of
nutritious food such as meat, milk, eggs, and many fish sent to warring soldiers.
The lack of nutritious animal food can certainly cause nutritional imbalances that
can befall the society, therefore Popeye's character appears on the pretext that
people want to eat vegetables instead of nutrients obtained from animal foods,
usually children do not like vegetables because they prefer sweet food, by
utilizing the popularity of Popeye at that time made it a weapon to make people
aware of the importance of eating vegetables.
At first Popeye gets his super strength not because of eating spinach, but after
stroking the head of a chicks, and finally replaced with a gimmick, Popeye will
become strong after eating spinach, from this it has been clearly seen with
changes in the gimmick showing certain intentions to convey to the public, taking
advantage of Popeye's popularity at the time, which was in great demand by the
public, especially children, making the right choice as a medium for spinach
promotion, children is the type where he will follow what their favorite people are
doing, seeing the greatness of Popeye eradicating his enemies with the super
powers he gets after eating spinach makes them mimic what Popeye is doing, one
of them eating spinach in hopes of being strong like Popeye, while adults who
were not so concerned about the nutrients contained in vegetables, with Popeye's
impressions they were curious how many nutrients are there in spinach, and make
them realize how important it is to eat vegetables.

Conclusion

In conclusion the emergence of Popeye comics has a positive impact on everyone,

its appearance can change people's views about the importance of eating
vegetables, with its own appeal Popeye managed to make major changes to
people's mindsets about vegetables, making it role model for children.
