Hindustan Unilever Limited

Hindustan Unilever Limited is a subsidiary the British company Unilever. The presence of HUL was
marked for the first time in India with the import of the product ‘Sunlight’, in 1888. Slowly, they
launched Lifebuoy, Pears, Lux, Vim. In 1933, they set up a soap factory in Mumbai and Lever
Brothers India Limited was incorporated in the country.

In 1956, Hindustan Vanaspati Manufacturing Company Limited, United Traders Limited and Lever
Brothers India Limited merged to form Hindustan Lever Limited. The name was changed in 2007 to
Hindustan Unilever Limited. Many merger and acquisitions were strategically implemented like
Lakme, Kissan, Kwality.

The company has now launched many socially responsible initiatives like Project Shakti, Lifebuoy
Swasthya Chetna. Today, it continues to help people feel and look good and make more out of their
lives.

Manufacturing Capacity

In 2021, The manufacturing capacity of the company was back to the pre-pandemic levels with all of
it’s factories and warehouses open. It has 30 manufacturing facilities in the country. It had also
increased the capacity by 30% in anticipation of a third COVID wave. They are continuously investing
in technology. It is said to invest Rs. 700 crore in a detergent unit in Uttar Pradesh by 2025 to boost
production capacity.

Product Development and Technology

The company has new product offering in foods, Kissan Peanut Butter, Hellmann’s Mayonnaise. It
has three R&D centers in India where 100 PhD scientists work for new product development. The
company is digitizing upstream sourcing network for cost optimization.

It is incorporating Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning for redesigning distribution networks
and manufacturing. It has invested in a state-of-the-art spray dried detergent powder plant in
Sumerpur, UP. This plant will manufacture for HUL brands like Surf Excel. The design of the plant
allows for an ecosystem of manufacturing partners, logistic operators and material suppliers to be
located at the plant. This allows for optimal integration of supply chain.

It is also investing in technological capabilities like Virtual Try-On, Skin Analyser, etc.

Market Share and Sales

HUL is the leading firm in 90% of its portfolio categories and has a gain of 75% share of the portfolio.
The company has a Revenue of Rs. 52704 crores and Operating Income of Rs. 11918 crores in 2022.

HUL’s detergents market share has grown 4 times over the past 5 years, Surf Excel being the biggest
brand in Laundry. The market share of hair care reached an all time high in 2021.

In 2021, the company reported an Annual Turnover of Rs. 50336 crores and Profit after Tax was Rs.
8818 crores
