Concept Notes

Confirmation is the sacrament in which through the power of the

Holy Spirit a baptized person is drawn into closer union with church
and endowed with strength to actively spread the Gospel (CFC
1658).

Effects of the Sacrament of Confirmation

 It strengthens and confirms the grace of Baptism by fully

receiving the 7 gifts of the Holy Spirit.
 It strengthens and confirms the mission to give public witness to
Christ and the church traditionally, it is said that confirmed makes
you a “soldier of Christ”.

THE MINISTER THE MATTER THE FORM

The ordinary minister of Baptism the laying of hands and the Sacred Chrism. The Sacred “Be sealed
is the bishop, who is successor of Chrism is made of olive oil mixed with perfume. It is with the
the Apostles, with the fullness of consecrated by the bishop during the Chrism Mass on Holy gift of the
the sacrament of Holy Orders. A Thursday. The perfume means that those who receive the Holy
priest can administer the Confirmation must bring into the world the sweet smell of Spirit.”
Confirmation only in danger of Christ. Traditionally, the bishop slaps the cheek of the
death or in special cases with the confirmand to signify that they are soldiers of Christ,
permission of the bishop. willing to bravely endure all kinds of trials for the sake of
Jesus.

Gestures and Meaning of this Sacrament

1. Laying on of hands is a biblical gesture in which the bishop invokes the Holy Spirit through song and
prayer.
2. Anointing with Holy Chrism is a sign of abundance, joy, and consecration to Christ. Christ has put His seal
on us and given us His Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee. This seal of the Holy Spirit marks our total
belonging to Christ. The bishop dips his right thumb in the Chrism and makes the Sign of the Cross on the
forehead of each candidate and says the following words: “BE SEALED WITH THE GIFT OF THE HOLY
SPIRIT.”
Thus with the anointing with Chrism during Confirmation, the Christian is empowered and further
strengthen to share more fully in the mission of Christ: to worship God, to lovingly serve others and to
witness to his faith.
3. The Bishop’s gesture and greetings of peace has come to express the same message: that the
sacramental encourages the Christian to give a more mature witness to God’s saving love for everyone.
4. The sign of peace signifies and demonstrates ecclesial communion with the bishop and with all the faithful
(cf. CFC 1301).
PREPARATION OF CONFIRMANDS, PARENTS, AND
GODPARENTS/SPONSORS.
The sacrament of Confirmation is usually received by confirmands
who are around the “age of discretion.” However, more important than
the “age” for confirmation is the careful preparation for the confirmand,
the parents, and the sponsors (cf. CFC 1662). Regarding
godparents/sponsors, CFC (1664) tells us to follow faith norms wherein
godparents/sponsors should be:
 Sufficiently mature persons, atleast 16 years old.
 Good-living Catholics who have been confirmed; and
 Capable and sincerely intending to help the newly confirmed to
faithfully live out the duties of Christian life.
Confirmation is called the Sacrament of maturity. It is not physical
maturity or adulthood of a person. It is maturity of life of Christian
responsibility. In short, to live a more mature response to God’s love.
Confirmation is a celebration that confers the gift witness and a defender
of the Christian faith. One needs a supply of courage, strength of
character and discerning attitude to face all the realities. There are 7
traditional gifts of the Holy Spirit: wisdom, understanding, counsel, strength, knowledge, piety or fear of the
Lord and delight or wonder and awe in God’s presence. (Is. 11:13) (cf. Roman Sacramentary, Rite of
Confirmation).
The traditional gifts of the Holy Spirit greatly help the Christian in becoming more mature and ever
more courageous to practice her/his faith especially before trials and difficulties. The key of our solid
foundation is the Holy Spirit, the interior, indwelling source of our life of grace. The spirit helps us to have faith
in God, hope in God’s fidelity and mercy, and respond to His love. In other words, the Spirit helps us to begin
to think like Disciples of Christ, overcome problems, and be positive thinkers rather than turn back into
ourselves and fall into self-pity.
In other words, the Spirit helps us to begin to think like faithful Disciples of Christ, to overcome
problems, and be positive thinkers rather than turn back into ourselves and fall into self-pity.
Confirmation makes the Christian stronger as it confirms maturity to the member by giving the gifts of
the Holy Spirit in a special way.
“Be sealed with the gift of the Holy Spirit” are the important words said in this Sacrament. It calls us to
witness to Gospel values. Even if there is hardly promise of success, we will be able to rise above our mistakes
and misfortune, and continuously pray in silence knowing that God is there who always listens and care for us.
It is the Holy Spirit empowerment that we experience in the reception of the Sacrament of Confirmation.
Confirmation symbolizes the power to go forth and witness to the gospel. It is a call to an active
membership dimension of our baptismal commitment. The meaning of this sacrament centers on the person
of the Holy Spirit and His role in the on-going saving works of Christ continued through the Church.

The Sacrament of Confirmation perfects our baptism because Christ marks us with the seal of the
Holy Spirit by clothing us with the power from on high so that we may be His witnesses.
