First published in the December 1903 issue of Strand Magazine,

H.G. Wells’ The Land Ironclads was a prophetic tale set during a
conflict not unlike the First World War. Two factions, one
composed of “strong, outdoor types”, the other composed of
“civilized townsmen”, are locked in a stalemate. Finally, the
seemingly-weak townsmen introduce to the battlefield a terrifying
new weapon of mass destruction: the land ironclad. Much like
the tanks of the First World War, the Ironclads of Wells’
imagination were towering metal monsters, bristling with remote-
controlled rifles. With the press of a button and the cool precision
of a draughtsman, a soldier in the iron beast could take down
any man, no matter the distance or inclination. In a short span of
time, the more “civilized” troops overrun their heavyset
adversaries, whose tactics had been made obsolete the very
moment the ironclads appeared.
