General Assessment Guidelines

 Make sure you answer all questions.
 Make sure you are answering what the question is asking you – if you do not
understand the question ask your tutorial leader.
 All work must be your own and cannot be copied from any other source.
This is called plagiarism, see p.46 of the Student handbook. If you use
books or the internet for ideas or quotes you must reference these sources
correctly according to the Turabian style as outlined in the student handbook
pp56-68. The student handbook is available on the college portal.
 Make sure you write in appropriate formal English required for written
assessments. This means you are not to use slang words or conversational
English. It also means that you need to use full sentences and use appropriate
terminology to explain your ideas.
 Make sure you provide adequate detail and explanation for each answer.
The word count is a guide for this and most of the time one sentence answers
are not adequate.
 Use the sample answers as a guide in how to complete the assessment.
 The sample answers are a guide and demonstrate the minimum standard
required to gain competency. If you do not demonstrate the minimum
standard you will not be marked competent.

Submission Guidelines
 Before submitting your assessment, check your spelling and grammar!
 Make sure you SAVE a copy of your work on your own computer so that you
can make any necessary changes for competency without retyping your
whole assessment.
 You need to complete your assessment in a Word 97-2003 compatible
document, this is a .doc file type.
 Include all questions in one document. If you submit each question in
separate documents the college portal will only show the last document
submitted and you will therefore be marked not competent because all the
questions are not available to be marked.

ASSESSMENT TEMPLATE

answer each question fully. You do not have to use this template if you do not want to
it is a helpful guide and you do need to make sure the headings are used.

Christian
Doctrine

Doctrine of
The Bible This is not an answer that you can use.
Example Answer only

Q.1 Research:
Belief 1: The Bible is the Divinely inspired Word of God.

As Bruce Milne writes, “One way of expressing the conviction that in the
Bible God himself speaks his words directly to us is to call it “God’s Word.” 1
The written words of the Bible are not just merely human thoughts, rather
God has communicated through people his ways and thoughts. The Bible
itself expresses this in 2 Timothy 3:16 “All Scripture is God-breathed and is
useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so
that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.”
Since we are saying that the Bible is no less than God’s words, we must
acknowledge that the Bible speaks to us with the very authority of God. It
should have the first and the last say in a believer’s life. 2 Peter 1:19-21 also
indicates that “the prophecy of Scripture” did not come from humans but was
“spoken from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.” As Bruce
Milne says, “It did not emerge from the writers’ private reflections.”2

Belief 2: Scripture can only be truly interpreted by the Holy Spirit.

This belief goes hand in hand with the belief that the Bible is Divinely
inspired. Scripture is given to us by the Holy Spirit but then, this Spiritual
book can only truly be understood by us because the Holy Spirit reveals it to
us. This is not to say that God is being secretive with the meaning of
Scripture but that true understanding is his gift to His children. Matthew
11:25 quotes Jesus saying, “I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth,
because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and
revealed them to little children.” Also, in John 16:17 Jesus makes a promise
to the disciples that “when he, the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you in
to all the truth.” Therefore, as Bruce Milne says. The habit of approaching

Scripture in an attitude of prayer is entirely correct in this connection, as we
ask God to “Open my eyes that I may see wonderful things in your law.” (Ps
110:18)3
Q.2
Application:

Belief 1: I am able to trust that what I read in the Scriptures has come to me
from God Himself. It is not merely what a preacher or teacher or prophet of
old thinks is true about God – but it is God’s Word to me, from Himself.
Being Divinely inspired also means that the Word of God has authority in
and over my life because the words are not merely human ideas but are the
very words of God to me. They haven’t merely been recorded for my benefit
by a man but have been given through a man by the inspiration of the Holy
Spirit. This means too that I can truly trust the authoritative Word of God to
change situations in the natural realm because what God Himself has
declared has authority over His entire creation.

Belief 2: I can trust that each time I read the Word, God, by His Holy Spirit
has not only given me His Word but that He also wants to speak to me and
wants to reveal things to me. I can be confident that I don’t have to be
“clever” in a human sense, but instead I need to come in a childlike but
expectant way, believing that my Heavenly Father wants to speak to me, his
child! Furthermore, I cannot expect that study alone and my own research
will tell me the fullness of what God’s Word says, but only His Holy Spirit
can bring it alive and active in my life (Heb. 4:12.)

Q.3
Evaluation:
Belief 1: I have strong confidence that the bible is a trustworthy document
and I refer to it on a regular basis for guidance in my Christian walk.
However, I sometimes have difficulty consistently believing all of what it
says but I never doubt that the Bible is the source by which God speaks to his
community, the Church. I have realised this semester that far too much of
what I say I believe as a Christian is based on what preachers or pastors or
even my parents have told me. When I think about it more I realise that
sometimes I can either reject or accept what they say merely based on
whether I like what they say or not! However, if I truly believe that the Bible
is the Divinely inspired Word of God that I have to be reading the Bible for
myself and accepting it as the very Word of God!

Belief 2: I have to admit I don’t always have the confident expectation that
God wants to speak to me, His child or reveal things to me through His
Word. I can tend to assume that He is more interested in revealing truth to
Robert Fergusson or Chris Mendez! My confidence (or doubts) can tend to
change from day-to-day or from season-to-season but I have to remember
3

that He is the God who does not change and His heart to reveal His truth to
me is as true to me today – and every day – as it was to the first disciples to
whom Jesus promised that He would send His Holy Spirit to bring revelation
and truth. This assessment has caused me to be quite honest about the errors
in my thinking and I am praying that God would give me a truer and greater
revelation of this. I recently read Ephesians 1:17 in which Paul tells the
Ephesians, “I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious
Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may
know him better.” This has become my prayer over my own approach to the
reading the Bible and expecting to hear from God.
