OUR UNIVERSITY PARTNER

University of the West of England (UWE), located in Bristol, is a modern
university with roots that date back to the founding of the 16th century Bristol
Society of Merchant Venturers' Navigation School.

Today, UWE has more than 27,000 students, 4,000 of whom are international
hailing from 140 different countries.

The university offers over 600 courses at undergraduate, postgraduate,

professional and short course level, with a broad subject portfolio
encompassing the arts, creative industries, health, science, business, law,
environment and technology.

WHAT WE CAN ACCOMPLISH IN OUR COURSE

This project was created by a student to prototype a solar-

powered autonomous vehicle. It uses ultrasonic sensors
mounted on the front of the vehicle to scan the terrain in front.
It sends signals back to an Arduino that stores the data and
makes decisions on if the vehicle should move forward or not.
It also has a wireless received that operates on wifi networks
and GSM signal.

This device was created as a prototype to inform motorcyclists

next-of-kin. Its got a gyroscope that is programmed to
send an emergency signals over the 4G networks to a pre
programmed number with coordinates and a distress
message.

It was meant to be mounted as a

microelectronic device in motorbikes.

diagram representation, Frequency response of first and second order,
System identification, S-Plane and Root Loci, Controllers (PID, IP-D, etc).

INDIVIDUAL PROJECT
30 CREDITS | 100% EXAMS

This module is designed to give the student an opportunity to undertake

individual and self-directed work, in an area of their choice, related to their
award, and to further develop their engineering-based knowledge. The
project may encompass any aspect of engineering, and may result from a
student's industrial work, personal interest or experience at the university.
The learning will be predominantly independent, self-directed study, with
the support of a project supervisor/ the module leader.

MATERIALS FOR SEMICONDUCTORS

30 CREDITS | 75% COURSEWORK | 25% PRESENTATION

This module will cover the different properties (electrical, optical, and
magnetic) of electronic materials in relation to their importance in the
semiconductor industry and their technological applications such as wafer
devices, solid-state fuel cells, lithium secondary batteries, light-emitting
diodes and solid-state lasers. This will include semiconductors, electronic
ceramics, conducting polymers and optical and magnetic materials. This
module will also cover processes and operations in semiconductor
manufacturing.

INTEGRATED ELECTRO-MECHANICAL SYSTEMS

15 CREDITS | 60% COURSEWORK | 40% PRESENTATION

This course teaches the design of mechatronic systems which integrate

mechanical, electrical, and control systems engineering. The approach is
problem led with majority of the learning being achieved by working in
small groups on design tasks that require the integration of disciplines that
are required when considering mechatronic systems. To ensure active
engagement in the material the module is designed to provide significant
laboratory-based design experiences and the consideration of real
engineering problems. The module provides an opportunity for students
who wish to learn through laboratory based project work in a small
collaborative design team and so helps students understand the role of an
engineer working in such an environment.

ENERGY TECHNOLOGIES
15 CREDITS | 100% EXAM

This module teaches the principles and practice of a number of conventional

and renewable power generation systems including technical, economic,
environmental and political considerations.
