Formative Assessment Question

Examine Danielson's Domain 3, focusing specifically on component 3d. Share how you've attended to
this component in a recent lesson you have taught and/or your Study of Student Achievement (SSA) and
reflect on how it went and what you might do more or less of moving forward.

What did you do to elicit understanding? How did you provide feedback? Were students able to assess
their own understanding or progress?

Danielson’s Domain 3 focuses on learning experiences. Specifically, component 3d analyzes using

assessment for learning. The elements of success for this domain are “clear standards for success,
monitoring student understanding, and timely, constructive feedback”. This week, I taught a lesson in
math called Frames and Arrows. Students are given a rule such as “add 3” or “subtract 5” and must
complete the blank frames by applying the rule. There are also times when students are asked to
discover the rule by using the numbers given in a few frames.

As whole group instruction, we discussed how to complete the frames and arrows using our addition and
subtraction facts. We also discussed what happens when we travel backward on the frames. This whole
group instruction was led by asking many questions to engage student and check for understanding
throughout. Next time, I would have the student write their answers to the worksheet on their whiteboards
on the rug one at a time. This way I could check for every students’ understanding during instruction and
correct any common errors or misunderstandings.

After the whole group instruction, students worked with a partner to complete the journal page that went
along with the lesson. I circulated the room while they worked together to complete the page. I answered
any questions and redirected when I noticed students writing incorrect answers to provide feedback. At
the end of the lesson, students independently completed an exit ticket with two frames and arrows
problems. At the beginning of the next math class, I should have allowed the students to review their
answers to assess their understanding.
