Motion: Homework Is a Waste of Time

Our worthy opponents have carefully cherry-picked certain studies to support their motion and
have tried their very best to convince you that homework plays an important role in learning. Now I
would begin with affirming the words of our first speaker, he doesn’t get us wrong. Most of the students
are still feeling homework as a punishment – meaning they think they don’t deserve such a thing. From
the study Denish Pope did on 4,300 of students, only less than 1% of the students said homework was
not a stressor. Hence, I believe that all of us here are excluded from that 1%, assuming that I and you
have ever been in this kind of difficulty in learning.

Now we are going to the arguments by the opposing first speaker, she argued that homework
allows students to gain a broad knowledge. But, judges, how much information and source students
should acquire? Ladies and gentleman, it’s like you are consuming the edible, you must ingest it at a
slow pace till then you could consume another. It is similar with the speaker didn’t realise that if the
information students got, didn’t consumed properly, it will lead students to an overloading phase. The
students received too much things at once so they just swallow them without ingesting them. The
overabundance of information can exhaust and demoralise us. Ultimately, it can lead to burn-out or
depression.

Then the speaker tried to make a claim that students might learn the value of time
management. Now, teachers and our opponents, don’t get us twisted, the phrase “learn the value”
doesn’t have the implication to do with applying the time management itself. Now I would affirm once
more the words of our first speaker, too much homework could lead to the lost of interest in learning.
How would students like to arrange their schedule for homework if they think it is not an important task
to be done? Our first speaker also mentioned that lost enthusiasm of learning can steer the involvement
of the third person. If so, how could we expect students do spare their time for assignment if they
themselves don’t engage in it? Thus, don’t fall into the opponents’ absurdities to allocate unrelenting
school assignments.
