ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Bhagat was born on 22 April, 1974 in Delhi. After completing his
schooling, he got graduated from Indian Institute of Technology (IIT)
Delhi and did his masters from IIM Ahmedabad. After working for
eleven years in Hong Kong as an investment banker, he returned to
Mumbai and began fulltime writing. He had started his novel about life
on the campus of an IIT while at work only. After much struggle his
first novel ‘Five Point Someone’ came in 2004 and this very first
project led to immense rise in his fame. This book continues to be the
most landmark book in his literary career, being the highest selling
book of India till date. The book also won the Society Young
Achiever’s Award and Publisher’s Recognition Award.
Bhagat had started with comedy based novel writing it in simple
English. The author Samit Basu puts, “Chetan has shown how wrong
Indian publishers are when they explain away their failures to sell
Indian fiction to large numbers of Indians by saying there are no
readers Chetan’s managed to tell them they exist.” His easy style of
writing and the issues linking to everyday problems was well received
by readers, particularly the youth. What is clearly evident from
Bhagat’s first two books -five Point Someone and One Night at the
Call Center is that Bhagat constructs his narratives around the lives of
urbanised youngsters: the pressures to get into a top school, earn
high grades, get a good job and find the right partner. In other words,
much of his popularity can be attributed to his being able to have
created a connection with Indian youth. Bhagat has written 7 books so
far: Five Point Someone, One Night At the Call Center, The Three
Mistakes of My Life, Two States, Revolution 2020, What Young India
Wants and the latest being Half Girlfriend. Apart from writing novels,
Bhagat also writes for the columns of The Times of India and Dainik
Bhaskar among others. These columns have a focus on youth and
national development issues.
EARLY LIFE AND CAREER
Bhagat was raised in a Punjabi family in Delhi and studied at Army Public
School (1978-1991), Dhaula Kuan, New Delhi. He finished Mechanical
Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Delhi (1991-1995),
and went on to study Business management at the Indian Institute of
Management (IIM), Ahmedabad (1995-1997), where he was conferred the
title of “The Best Outgoing Student”. He found love with his classmate
Anusha Suryanarayan during their student days at IIM and they later got
married. The novel 2 States: The Story of My Marriage, is said to be a
fictional representation of their love story. After Bhagat completed his
education from IIT and IIM, he worked in a financial service company called
Peregrine based in Hong-Kong. Unfortunately it closed down in six months
but he continued to stay in Hong-Kong for eleven years, and was later
employed at Goldman Sachs. His novels are mostly written in ordinary
conversational English and his style of writing is lucid with linear narratives

Bhagat is listed by Fast Company, USA, as one of the world’s “100 most
creative people in business” and has also been included in the Time
magazine's list of "World's 100 Most Influential People" in the year 2010. In
the introductory article of his book, What Young India Wants, he explains
the reason for his change of profession from that of an investment banker to
a writer and says: I was an NRI, someone who earns in dollars and spends his
evening being nostalgic about India. I had no idea I would quit banking and
be back in the streets of Mumbai. If there is someone who should believe in
destiny, it is I. All of this became possible because of the one little, ignored
aspect of my personality when I was a child – me as the entertainer. It
surfaced again and changed my life … That same entertainer reemerged in
Hongkong. My other banker friends took on hobbies like gold and bridge.
Almost by chance, I decided to do what I enjoyed: tell stories. (Bhagat, What
Young India Wants xvi)

One Night @ the Call Center is a novel written by Chetan Bhagat, first
published in 2005. The novel revolves around a group of six call
center employees working at a call center in Gurgaon, Haryana, India. The

PLOT
The book begins with a frame story recounting a train journey
from Kanpur to Delhi. During the journey, the author meets a beautiful
girl who offers to tell him a story on the condition that he has to make
it his second book. After a lot of hesitation, the author agrees. The
story is about six people working in a call center and relates the
events that happen one night when get a phone-call from 'God'.
Claimed to be based on a true story, the author uses Shyam Mehra

the six call center employees. Shyam loves but has lost Priyanka, who
is now planning an arranged marriage with someone else, Vroom
loves Esha, Esha wants to be a model, Radhika is in an unhappy
marriage with a demanding mother-in-law, and Military Uncle wants to
communicate with his grandson. They all hate Bakshi, their cruel and
somewhat sadistic boss.
To cheer themselves up, all the lead characters of the novel decide to
go to a night club. After enjoying for a while, they leave back for the
office. While returning, they face a life-threatening situation when their
vehicle crashes into a construction site hanging over a mesh of iron
construction rods. As the rods began to yield slowly, they start to
panic. They are unable to call for help as there is no mobile phone
network at that place, but Shyam's mobile phone starts ringing. The
phone call is from God, who speaks modern English. He speaks to all
of them and gives them suggestions to improve their life, and advises
them on how to get their vehicle out of the construction site. The
conversation with God motivates the group to such an extent that they
get ready to face their problems with determination and motivation.
Meanwhile, Vroom and Shyam hatch a plan to throw Bakshi out of the
call center and prevent the closing of the call center, whose
employees are to be downsized radically. When they return to the call

character has fixed a part of their life, and the author invites readers to
identify aspects of themselves and their lives that they would like to
change
