With my final outcome I wanted to convey how interesting and bizarre it is to find an object that was

out of place making it seem surreal. I wanted to communicate to the audience that surreal art can be
found anywhere from the side of a road to a river. Through my final piece I really want my audience
to question my illustrations and photographs and think ‘how did that get there and why is it there’
even if there is a ration explanation for how the objects ended up where they were.

With this outcome I feel that I managed to portray my theme within this piece by adding the
photographs I had taken of some of the misplaced objects that I had come across over the summer
holiday and the duration of this project as well as including my illustrations of some of the misplaced
objects, and then adding them onto a map of Birmingham with string pointing out whereabouts
these objects were found. I had also ripped the map to portray the urban look that my theme has, I
had also continued drawing on the brown paper and only highlighting the misplaced object to make
it contrast against the uncoloured background so the viewers eyes are drawn to the object as well as
making the object stand out like it did when I found it misplaced, this also fits in with the urban look
that my theme has. I had also made most of my photographs a bit darker to not only give it that
urban look but to emphasise the feel of abandonment.

What I would do differently for this outcome is that I would make the map a bit more zoomed in so
the string didn't look that cramped and to be more precise about where the object was found, I
would make it bigger as I feel that if the piece was bigger I would be able to add more illustrations
and photographs as I didn't get to include all of them, I would also add some of my illustrations of
the trolleys as well as the some of the successful photographs I took on the digital camera and
developed in the darkroom, as I feel that they were very successful and should have been shown
within this outcome. I would also have explored more around Birmingham and other places in the UK
to have more of a variety of the misplaced object locations as I think this would show how repetitive
it is to see a misplaced object in day-to-day life. I would also not include the white A2 sheet of card
and just place the piece directly onto the wall.

My research really helped inspired my work as I got to see how other artists communicate misplaced
objects through their illustrations and photography, such as, Liam Frankland’s Lost and Found
collection and Banksy’s ‘Show me the Monet’. These two artists in specific really helped inspire me as
I really liked how Liam Frankland photographed his lost and found items as it portrayed that feel of
abandonment which I really liked and Banksy’s ‘Show me the Monet’ illustration conveyed society
now and how beautiful places can get destroyed by man-made objects due to people misplacing
them. I had also really liked how Banksy painted the trolleys and wanted to adapt that into my
illustrations. I also think my summer project research helped inspire me with my theme as when I
was collecting photographs for my 4 themes for the summer project I really found the misplaced
object photographs interesting and wanted to continue photographing them and illustrating them to
eventually create a final outcome.

Throughout my project I had tried many techniques, medias and processes for both illustration and
photography. For illustration I had tried several different medias such as, a HB pencil, 6B pencil,
watercolour, guache paint, acrylic paint, fine liner, a white gel pen, a white pencil, a felt tip, white
paper, black card and brown paper. The main technique for my illustrations was using fine liner as
well as a white gel pen, watercolour and brown paper as my illustrations using these medias were
very successful. I had also used scribble tone for the leaves in the background of some of my
illustrations as this is a technique I used in previous projects last year and it was successful. Although
when using this technique it made some of the illustrations look messy. For my photographs I had
used a Canon EOS camera which I had recently received and have become used to the way it works
and all of the settings. For my photographs I tested out different angles and viewpoints to get the
best outcome, as well as normal light exposure and a lower exposure to portray the feel of
abandonment.

In my opinion my most successful design ideas were ideas two and three as I received positive
feedback from my tutors and peers for these ideas. I feel that the idea two which was a book
comparing my illustrations and photographs was successful due to the fact that it included both my
illustrations and photographs and conveyed my theme of misplaced objects well as you could see
both the object and its surroundings either in the illustration, in the photograph or in both. For my
third idea which was my final outcome I feel that this was the best and most successful design idea
as it really conveyed my theme of misplaced objects as you can clearly see the objects as well as
where they were found and it included both my photography skills and illustration skills.

My design idea one was my least successful as in the first idea of the repeated trolley on a
checkerboard you could not see that it was misplaced due to the lack of background within the
illustration and negatives of that illustration. For the first refinement of my design idea one which
was an Andy Warhol pop art take on my project I had used the same trolley which also did not
convey the misplacement of it and did not fit in with my urban look for the project due to the bright
colours. And finally for my second refinement of my design idea one which was another
checkerboard but with another five trolleys, It also did not communicate my theme that well due to
some of the illustrations and negatives not having a detailed background to show why it was
misplaced and one of the illustrations of a trolley in the river was not as good as the other
illustrations of the trolleys due to the fact that you could hardly see the trolley because of the leaves
and river. I feel as though if I had made several more illustrations of shopping trolleys that had a
detailed background and had only one illustration of each trolley within each square of the
checkerboard it would have communicated my theme well.
