Assignment 3

Sannidhya Gupta - 2021112012

Question 1:
Muktibodh's poem "बेचैन चील" describes the emotional state and restlessness of a
sparrow. This metaphor illustrates the common human feeling of yearning for an
impossibility. The sparrow represents the relentless search for meaning and freedom
that permeates the human psyche, touching on issues such as existential crisis, the
desire to become something with immense power, and the fight to escape from the
struggles of daily life. This poem by Muktibodh is a thought-provoking piece of literature
thanks to its potent language and striking imagery.
Here are some points that I think this poem differs on from the other poems of
Muktibodh:

1. Metaphorical Nature: This poem uses a metaphor, the restless sparrow, to explore
a deeper meaning, which is different from his more straightforward poems which
often work with literal meaning of the used words, used to describe social issues.

2. Existential Exploration: "बेचैन चील" delves into questions like existential crisis, a
less common theme in Hindi poetry during Muktibodh's time, reflecting the human

struggle for meaning in an indifferent world.

3. Intense Emotion: The poem is known for its emotional depth, portraying a human's
inner turmoil and yearning with sensitivity. This emotional intensity distinguishes it
from his more analytical works.

4. Universal Relevance: Unlike poems with specific social or political contexts, "बेचैन
चील" has a timeless quality, making it relatable across generations due to its themes
of restlessness and the quest for meaning.

5. Less Political Focus: In contrast to poems like “Jan Jan ka chehra ek” political and
societal issues, this poem is less political. Instead, it concentrates on the general
the human experience.

Question 2:
The ghazal begins with the poet expressing the sudden remembrance of a lost memory
- “रात यूँ दल म तरी खोई ई याद आई”, much like a lost memory coming to one's heart in the
stillness of the night. The poet then uses various metaphors in order to provide a better
understanding about what emotional influx he feels.
The first metaphorical expression is in the second line which goes: “जैसे वीराने म चुपके से
बहार आ जाए” which literally means that silently spring has arrived into a place that was
once deserted and barren. This means that just how the arrival of a spring would
rejuvenate a barren land and bring life to it, the thought of someone has brought the
same kind of warmth in his mind.
“जैसे सहरा म हौले से चले बाद-ए-नसीम” means that somehow, a cold morning breeze is
blowing in a desert. This, and the line above just tries to tell us the unexplainable and
unnatural way that the thought of someone, seemingly out of nowhere has taken over
his mind. And it has brought goodness and happiness, which has now flipped the state
of his mind, which was earlier depressing.
And in the last line, “जैसे बीमार को बे-व ह क़रार आ जाए” the author again, by using a
metaphorical expression, tries to say that just as if a patient would suddenly get relied,
the same way in his mind the thought of someone, supposedly, once his beloved,
arrives. This metaphorical imagery encapsulates the essence of the entire ghazal,
where moments of solace, remembrance, and longing unexpectedly come to the poet's
heart, much like an ailment finding unexplained comfort.

Assignment 3 2
Throughout the ghazal, the poet explores themes of nostalgia, longing, and the
enduring presence of a beloved's memory. His poetry is characterized by its emotional
depth and ability to evoke complex emotions and profound feelings.
