KEFLAVIK-NJARDVIK: 64␥ 00' N 22␥ 33' W
OVERVIEW: The port of Reykjanes (Keflavik-Njardvik) comprises the
following:
Keflavik: Recently expanded and extensively redeveloped facility with a
comprehensive range of harbour and supply facilities for vessels of most
sizes.
Njardvik: One of the region’s leading fishing harbours. The Reykjanes Fish
Market is close-by, with a wharf area and ice factory delivering ice to fishing
vessels at the quay side, and to other destinations in Reykjanes.
Helguvik: The most recently developed harbour in Reykjanes, providing
excellent facilities for some of the largest vessels sailing the North Atlantic.
There are ample industrial sites in the area close to the harbour, with ready
access to the geothermal power on which the Reykjanes region stands. In
addition, tax-free industrial zone has been planned for Helguvik.
Grofin: The Grof Marina has floating docks with space for up to 82 smaller
boats with a number of tourist activities available, including sailing trips, sea
angling and whale watching.

facilities for passengers from tenders.
Njardvik: Max. quay length up to 130 m., draft 7.5 m. – 9.0 m.
7,000 sq.m. wharf area includes cooling/frozen stores and a good storage
area for containers. 20,000 sq.m. storage area under construction.
The Nardvik Shipyard is close by and other service oriented industries for
shipping.
Helguvik: The main oil supply and distribution harbour of Reykjanes, offering
improved services for tankers and other commercial vessels.
The port accommodates ships up to LOA 200 m., depth 10.0 m. Quay
length 150 m. with a generous wharf area behind it.

towards south coast and well in the fjord. When NE off town towards north
coast, but keep clear of small boat moorings.

PRE-ARRIVAL INFORMATION: Neskaupstadur Radio 2182 kHz
(TFM) 24 hour watch. VHF Channels 16 and 26. Range approximately
40 miles.

TUGS: No tugs but large motor boats are normally obtainable, if necessary.
BERTHS: The three quays are length 70 m., 70 m. and 60 m., with depths
of 7.0 – 8.0 m. The berths within the port have a total length of 470 m. No
specific requirements unless over 7.0 m. draft, when fendering required.
TANKER FACILITIES: Diameters of lines 4 in. and 6 in. BP and Shell
have their own small quays. Esso uses the BP jetty.
CARGO HANDLING FACILITIES: Storage: There is a large
warehouse located alongside the main quay.
STEVEDORES: If possible 24 hours ETA. Preferably before 1600 hrs. for
commencing next morning. Load or discharge rates according to goods.

APPROACHES: The harbour approach is unrestricted and ice-free all
year round.
PILOTAGE: Compulsory for all vessels LOA over 60 m. Masters of ships
calling more than eight times a year may apply for a Pilotage Exemption
Certificate.
All vessels carrying hazardous or dangerous cargo must use a Pilot. All
vessels must give the Harbour Office at least 24 hours notice of ETA and
must contact the pilot station (VHF Channels 12 or 17) at least 3 hours in
advance of ETA. Pilots board and disembark at Lightbuoy No. 7 or in the
roads.
Pilot Boat: Grey hull with red and white deckhouse. International signals used
if necessary. Pilot boat leaves harbour on request and meets vessel up to
1 nautical mile off Grotta (east of Buoy No. 6). Most frequent boarding place
is Buoy No. 7 Kollafjordur.
ANCHORAGES: Good anchorage at Kollafjordur in 30 – 35 m.,
1.5 nautical miles north of Engey Lighthouse. Anchorage prohibited in
neighbourhood of harbour entrance.
PRATIQUE: Pratique obtained through Customs Authorities. In case of
suspected disease notify port office or Agent in advance.
VHF: The Harbour office maintains a 24 hour listening watch on
Channels 12 and 16. Working frequencies are Channels 12 and 17.
VTS/RADAR: Radar service available for vessels approaching harbour.
Pilot office can be contacted by VHF Channel 16. Working
Channels 12 and 17.
TUGS: Available throughout 24 hours. Use of tugs is not compulsory, but
vessels greater than 10,000 d.w.t. must have one tug on stand-by. The Port
Authority will refund 50% of towage fee if the tug is not used.
All vessels carrying hazardous cargoes must use a tug for berthing.
All harbour towage is provided by the Port Authority, which owns and
operates 2␺760 h.p. (10 tons BP) tugs and 1␺1,250 h.p. (17 tons BP) tug.
Tugs meet vessels in the roadstead. Ship’s lines used. Two ocean-going
tugs of 800 h.p. and 1 smaller tug available.
BERTHS: There are two main harbour areas, Gamla Hofnin (Old Harbour)
and Sundahofn.
Gamla Hofnin: The Old Harbour is protected by two moles, entrance width
100 m. The harbour is divided into Vesturhofn (West Harbour) and Austurhofn
(East Harbour). Total quay length is 2,900 m. of which 600 m. is for fishing
vessels. Depth at entrance 7.0 m., alongside 6.0 – 8.0 m. (MLWS). Larger
vessels berth at HW.
Vesturhofn: Used for unloading fishing vessels, for bunker barges, as a
lay-by area and slipway for vessels under repair.
Austurhofn: Includes a cruise ship berth of 170 m. at Midbakki, and a Ro-Ro
terminal for the Akranes ferry. Icelandic Coast Guard and Marine Research
Institute both have bases here. The harbour is used for landing wet fish from
fishing vessels for auction. It is also used by deep-sea trawlers for landing
frozen fish.
Sundahofn: The harbour has unrestricted access. Water depth is more than
8.0 m. (MLWS). There are two main areas, Vatnagardar and Kleppsvik.
Vatnagardar: Quay length 780 m., depth greater than 8.0 m. Used mainly
for handling containers and unitised cargoes.
Eimskip occupies the Kleppsbakki and Sundabakki Quays, where there is
a 250,000 sq.m. container terminal and a Ro-Ro berth. Storage for
5,000 containers with approximately 500 reefer points.

Korngardur Quay accommodates bulk grain carriers at
Berths 411 and 412. This quay is also used in summer for cruise ships too
large (greater than 170 m. LOA) to berth in the Gamla Hofnin.
Kleppsvik: Approach channel 50 m. wide, dredged to 7.0 m. (MLWS), depth
7.0 – 8.0 m., quay length 550 m. Used mainly for handling containers.
Samskip has a 141,000 sq.m. container terminal at Holtabakki (quay length
140 m., depth 8.0 m.) and part of Vogabakki (quai length 450 m., depth
8.0 m.). Capacity 2,000 containers.
Part of the new 300 m. quay at Vogabakki is used for general cargo/bulk
vessels and trawlers.
Grafarvogur: Approach channel dredged to 4.0 m. (MLWS), depth 4.5 m.
Used for discharging and storing cement, gravel and asphalt for industry.

New terminal at Eyjagardur (just off Gamla Hofnin) has depth 13.4 m.,
allowing 45,000 d.w.t. tankers to berth.
CRANES: The port has approximately 20 mobile cranes lifting up to
100 tonnes.
Eimskip Terminal in the Sundahofn has a 32.5 tonne capacity Paceco
rail-mounted gantry and a new 80 tonne, 25 TEU per hour capacity Gottwald
mobile crane.
Samskip has two cranes on its terminal equipped to handle containers:
One LIMA mobile harbour crane and one Loraine mobile crane.
Recent addition of Liebherr LHM 400 mobile crane, capacity 104 tonnes,
outreach 12 containers.
STEVEDORES: Stevedoring must be arranged in advance preferably by
Agent. Working Hours: 0800 – 1700. With labour unions permission, work may
be carried out until 2200 hrs. and on Saturdays.

Recreational Facilities: The main Tourist Attraction is the Volcano, still
smoking from the 1973 eruption.
Good views of the spectacular Harbour and Entrance can be had by
climbing up into the surrounding hills. The commercial area, near the Docks,
is mainly taken up by the fishing industry. There are a few shops, a bank
and a post office. Prices are reported to be high.
There are some snack type bars. Beer is Banned! Spirits are available –
at a price.
