Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards
bodies (ISO member bodies). The work o f preparing International Standards is normally carried out
through ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical
committee has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International
organizations, governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work.
ISO collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters o f
electrotechnical standardization.
The procedures used to develop this document and those intended for its further maintenance are
described in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 1. In particular the different approval criteria needed for the
di fferent types o f ISO documents should be noted. This document was dra fted in accordance with the
editorial rules of the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2 (see www.iso.org/directives).
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some o f the elements o f this document may be the subject o f
patent rights. ISO shall not be held responsible for identi fying any or all such patent rights. Details o f
any patent rights identified during the development o f the document will be in the Introduction and/or
on the ISO list of patent declarations received (see www.iso.org/patents).
Any trade name used in this document is in formation given for the convenience o f users and does not
constitute an endorsement.
For an explanation on the voluntary nature o f standards, the meaning o f ISO specific terms and
expressions related to con formity assessment, as well as in formation about ISO's adherence to the

This fourth edition cancels and replaces the third edition (ISO 287:2009), which has been technically
revised.
The main changes compared to the previous edition are as follows:
— precision data (previously in Clause 11) have been moved to Annex A;
— editorial changes have been made for clarification and removal o f inconsistencies.
Introduction
The determination o f dry matter content and moisture content are carried out for di fferent purposes.
ISO 638 is used in cases where the dry matter content is needed to calculate the result o f chemical
analysis or physical testing and when the determination o f the moisture content o f a sample, rather
than a lot, is required. As an example, the dry matter content o f the sample is needed to express the
content o f elements, such as cadmium and manganese, in relation to the oven-dry mass o f the sample.
This document is used for the purpose of determining the average moisture content and the variation
in moisture content (maximum and minimum values) of a lot. In the paper and board trade, the
moisture content is important since it influences converting processes, such as printing and copying.
The moisture content also has an influence on curl and dimensional stability.
of paper and board. The procedure in Clause 8, describing how the test pieces are drawn from the lot, is
performed at the time of sampling.

From the centre of each ream or parcel, take at least four consecutive sheets and then proceed as
8.2.1.2.
s p e ci fie d i n
To determine the variation in moisture content between the centre and edges o f the sheet, select a layer
of sheets in accordance with 8.2.2.1 or 8.2.2.2 and proceed as specified in 8.2.1.3.
8.2.3 When the unit is a reel
Discard all damaged layers from the exterior o f the reel. Discard also at least three undamaged layers i f
the grammage is less than 225 g/m 2 or at least one undamaged layer i f the grammage is greater than or
equal to 225 g/m 2 . The number o f layers discarded may need to be increased according to the efficiency
o f wrapping and influence o f storage conditions.
Take, by cutting in the cross-direction, a layer o f thickness at least 5 mm across the full width o f the reel
and lay it out flat. From the selected layer, take sets o f strips having a width between 50 mm and 75 mm
in the machine direction and a length not less than 150 mm. Cut one set of strips from near each reel
edge and another set from the region of the mid-point between the edges, or cut a set of strips from the
complete width o f the reel. Take care not to separate either the sheets comprising the layer or the strips
comprising a set.
Discard the top and bottom strip from each set of strips; the remainder together constitutes a test piece
and shall have a mass o f at least 50 g. Quickly fold or cut the strips comprising the test piece and enclose
them together in a container. Weigh the container with its contents and calculate the mass of the test
piece at the time of sampling, m 0 .
Prepare duplicate pieces for each unit and position sampled.
Where the bulk o f a 50 g test piece is very large, as for instance for very lightweight papers, a smaller
mass o f at least 25 g may be used. I f a smaller mass is used, state this mass in the test report.
8.3 When the unit is a package that cannot or should not be completely unwrapped
The package can consist o f, for example, reels, pallets or possibly reams, in storage or selected by
Customs.
8.3.1 Average moisture content for samples with known machine direction
Cut a window of dimension 50 mm to 75 mm wide and at least 150 mm long with the short dimension
parallel to the machine direction. Cut the sample to a su fficient depth to enable the requisite number o f
strips, a fter discarding the top three strips and any damaged strips, to constitute a test piece o f at least
50 g. Immediately, place the test piece in a container. Weigh the container and its contents and calculate
the mass of the test piece at the time of sampling, m 0 .
Vary the position o f the window from unit to unit.
Prepare duplicate test pieces for each unit and position sampled.
Alternatively, test pieces 50 mm to 75 mm wide and the full cross-direction width o f the sample may
be used.
Where the bulk o f a 50 g test piece is very large, as for instance for very lightweight papers, a smaller
mass o f at least 25 g may be used. I f a smaller mass is used, state this mass in the test report.
