Design-1 Sheet 1 Design of a rigid flanged coupling Design of a rigid flanged coupling A rigid flanged coupling connects two 50 mm diameter shafts transmitting 100 KW and running at 10 rev/s. the coupling has the following specifications: “Type of service:- light shocks (serves factor = 1.2) *Number of bolts: 4 *Diameter of hub: 1.5 shaft diameter *Material of shafts:- 0.25%C carbon steel (S,=520MPa , S,=450MPa) *Material of keys:- 0.30%C CDA steel (Sy=420MPa , Sb=380MPa) +Material of flanges: 0.20%C cast carbon steel (Sy=385MPa , Sb=370MPa) Material of bolts: class 5.8 medium- carbon steel, (Sy=395 MPa , Sb=300 MPa) Considering the bolts to fit the holes with clearance [“only three bolts are loaded]: 1. Check stresses in the shaft 2. Determine the diameter of bolts. 3. Check stresses in the keys. (Safety factor > 1.5) Guide dimensions: Key length = 1.5 dyyan, Width = djan/4 and thickness = djaa/6 4. Check stresses in the flanges. 5.Draw a fully dimensioned constructional drawing for the coupling. Design-1 Sheet 2 Knuckle Joint & Cotter Joint a) Knuckle Joint:- Design the knuckle joint shown in fig.1 to withstand a load of 30 KN. The yoke and rod are made of cold-drawn carbon steel 0.4%C having 600 MPa yield strength. The pin is made of cold-drawn carbon steel 0.3%C having 520 MPa yield strength. Use a factor of safety of 2 for all components. note that (surface factor 1.5).
