For this Reading Quest whenever you find the brain icon, take your time
to Stop and think.

Reflecting upon your immediate context can help you identify key
aspects, strengths, and opportunities for your institution.
Axes / Curricular themes:

Transversality Sociocultural approach Diversity Equity

The first axis is transversality where connections are established between the
academic, scientific, and daily aspects of life through interdisciplinary themes that
guide the comprehensive training of students. Transversality fosters the teaching of
English as a medium of instruction that works as a vehicle for the student's social,
human, scientific and professional transformation through dialogue between
different disciplines.
The second axis: the sociocultural approach promotes the development of
meaningful experiences in learning English from the interaction between peers and
the teacher's mediation. The educational community will be able to see this approach
reflected in the entire plan, especially in the functions presented in the scope and
sequence and curricular units by grade. In this way, the teacher will be able to have
a clear vision of the use in the context of English and thus build their learning and
evaluation activities.
Another axis has to do with the cultural, social, and demographic diversity of our
country. Therefore, diversity is considered a third fundamental axis, understanding
that the plan must be sufficiently extensive and flexible to reach an open and
multicultural audience. It should be noted that diversity means recognizing different
ways of teaching and evaluating English learning for a full development of
communicative and intercultural competence.
The last axis is equity, which recognizes the right of all Colombian students to a
quality education with equal opportunities where the diversity of the country is
considered, but at the same time there is a framework that inspires the classroom
towards innovation and quality.

Stop and think

Does your school´s curriculum have or work any axis? Do you think it is
important to include them?
Now that we know the curricular axes, we should keep in mind the characteristics of
the Suggested Curriculum Structure which is not only being flexible and adaptable
but also adjusting the following factors:
● The institutional environment
● Internal bilingualism projects
● The number of hours or intensity of the subject
● Access to teaching materials

How flexible is the Suggested Curriculum Structure? The

curriculum is completely flexible to changing and dynamic
contexts. In other words, the institutions define how to
approach this process either by adopting, modifying, or
adjusting each of the elements belonging to the plan.
Teachers can adapt the themes by including topics from
their immediate context. They have the right to innovate
and improve this plan.

In conclusion, the axes and characteristics of the curriculum were designed

to encourage the creation of spaces for dialogue within the institutions and to
enhance the comprehensive training of students.
