High School Graduation Requirements
A student entering Grade 9 in the 2015-2016 school year and thereafter shall enroll in the
courses necessary to complete the curriculum requirements for the Foundation High School
Program (22 credits) specified in § 74.12 of this title and the curriculum requirements for at
least one endorsement (26 credits) specified in §74.13 of this title (relating to Endorsements). A
student may graduate under the Foundation High School Program without earning an
endorsement if, after the student’s sophomore year: (1) the student and the student’s parent or
person standing in parental relation to the student are advised by a school counselor of the
specific benefits of graduating from high school with one or more endorsements; and (2) the
student’s parent or person standing in parental relation to the student files with a school
counselor written permission, on a form adopted by the Texas Education Agency (TEA), allowing
the student to graduate under the Foundation High School Program without earning an
endorsement.

High School Endorsements


High school endorsements consist of a related series of courses that are grouped together by
interest or skill set. They provide students with in-depth knowledge of a subject area. Students
must select an endorsement before entering 9th grade. Students can choose from five
endorsement areas:

Gifted/Talented Program
West Oso ISD offers programs for gifted and talented students in grades K-12. All GT students
are required to complete a GT project and may be required to take a GT prep class. At the high
school level, the gifted/talented students are served primarily through the Pre-Advanced
Placement, and Advanced Placement. Additionally, the Distinguished Level of Achievement
Program is designed to meet the needs of gifted/talented students. Contact a counselor for
additional information.

Course Descriptions and the Scheduling Process
In the course description section that follows, you will find a brief description of each course
offered at West Oso Junior High School listed under the appropriate grade level. The course
descriptions include which specified courses may be taken and any prerequisites and
recommendations. Elective courses are offered to meet student interest. Students are urged to
plan carefully. Although students will receive specific instructions and assistance from the
school counselor during the pre-registration process, the responsibility for selecting
appropriate career and graduation choices rests with students and parents. Students will
choose specific courses with parent approval and counselors will verify that those choices will
meet preparation for each grade level requirements.

Required Courses
All students at West Oso Junior High School are required to take the four core area subjects:
Math, Reading, Science, and Social Studies. All 6th and 7th grade students are required to take
Physical Education (PE) for two years at the middle school level. Athletics may be substituted
for PE by any 7th grade student who chooses to participate in at least two (2) sports throughout
the school year. All 6th grade students are required to take a technology course. All 7th grade
students are required to take a semester of Touch Data Systems, which will earn them a half
(.5) credit of high school credit towards graduation. The Touch Data Systems course will be
taken in conjunction with Investigating Careers. If a student does not meet a passing standard
on STAAR tests, they may be placed in a block class for math and/or reading. Therefore, those
students will only be able to have one or two electives.

This curriculum is designed to meet the needs of those students who are gifted in Math. It requires in
depth mastery of the high school Pre-AP Algebra I requirements and uses the high school textbook. The
TEKS include variables and open structures, equations, inequalities and problem solving, polynomials,
factoring, fractions, quadratic equations and graphing – all in word problem formats. Other
characteristics of the course include content immersion, a fast pace and assessment of performance at
high levels of thinking. Daily homework may be required. Students who pass the course will receive high
school Algebra I credit.
Note: The grade earned will be calculated in the student’s high school GPA. Students will be
required to take the EOC Algebra I test.

HIGH SCHOOL WEIGHTED GRADE SYSTEM (RANK)

The District shall categorize and weight eligible courses as Level III, Level II, and Level I in accordance with
provisions set forth in EIC(LOCAL) policy and as designated in appropriate District publications. Eligible AP
and dual credit courses shall be categorized and weighted as Level III courses. Eligible Pre-AP and Honors
courses shall be categorized and weighted as Level II courses. All other eligible courses shall be categorized
and weighted as Level I courses.
