Launch & Receive Cable Settings
• Configure length of Launch and Receive cables, if present
• Enable or disable Launch Quality Check
• Strongly recommend Enable to detect dirty, damaged, poorly seated, or
mismatched (UPC to APC) connectors
• Start SmartAuto test by pressing Start soft key or Start/Stop button
• FlexScan always checks first for Live Fiber
• Will not allow test at 1310 or 1550 nm if live signal present
• FS200-304 will allow in-service test at 1650 nm
• FlexScan checks loss & reflectance of OTDR connection (Launch Check enabled)
• If launch quality OK, test begins using auto settings at both wavelengths

SmartAuto Test
AFL Confidential 7
Live Fiber & Launch Quality Checks
• Every OTDR test begins with Live Fiber check
• If live fiber detected, OTDR test @ 1310/1550 not allowed
• FS200-304 supports live fiber testing using 1650 nm
• This prevents disrupting service in live PONs

• If Launch Quality Check enabled, OTDR checks loss &

reflectance of OTDR connection to network

• Launch Quality Check alerts user if excess loss or reflection

detected at OTDR connection
• When alerted, user should check the following:
• Are OTDR & fiber ring connections clean & undamaged?
• Use FOCIS inspection probe to view fiber end-faces
• Use One-click to clean both OTDR & network connectors
• Are OTDR and fiber ring connections same type?
• Mating UPC to APC results in high loss & high reflectance
• Is the fiber connector fully seated in OTDR port?
• Is the OTDR connector adapter tight?

AFL Confidential 8
LinkMap Display (SmartAuto Mode)
