PRI Oma Ae CORPUS $e EONS L BEB RUICBSAN —CLik_) For users of this book Purpose of this book ‘This book has two purposes. @ Iwill help you pass the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (ILPT) for N4. © It will enable you to improve your reading comprehension skills generally, not just prepare you to pass examinations, About the reading comprehension questions in the JLPT for N47 ‘The Level Na JLPT is divided into three parts: Language Knowledge (Characters and Vocabulary) (30 minutes); Language Knowledge (Grammar)/Reading Comprehension (60 minutes); and Listening Comprehension (35 minutes). Reading comprehension questions form part of the Language Knowledge(Grammar)/Reading Comprehension section. ‘There are three types of reading comprehension question. 1, Understanding the content (short texts): 4 questions (you answer questions on short texts of about 100-200 characters in length; | question, 4 topics) 2, Understanding the content (medium-length texts): 4 questions (you answer questions on a medium- length text of around 450 characters; 4 questions, | topic) 3. Finding out information: 2 questions (you answer questions on a text of around 400 characters in. length from Guide-type information or a Notification; 2 questions, | topic) How this book is structured This book takes a gradual approach in building up ability to read Japanese texts, to help students to pass the JLPT, roficiency Training] Unit 1 Building up your reading skills Unit 2 Building up your skills in answering, questions Unit 3 Addressing multiple questions [Mock Examination Detailed commentaries are given, Proficiency Training) Unit 1 Building up your reading skills Unit 1 contains basic reading comprehension exercises for students who are not yet used to reading texts in Japanese, ‘Students preparing for the N4 examination may not be used to reading Japanese, since the emphasis up to (Ce) For users ofthis book this point has been on conversation, However, as your Japanese proficiency level rises, opportunities for reading increase, Therefore, in this book, you first practice the approaches that are necessary for reading texts and sentences, 1. Combinations of sentence types 2, Breaks in the sentences 3. Noun-modifier elements and nouns 4, Who was the agent? 5. The mood of the narrator 6. Meaning conveyed by context 7.28, EH, cto, 8 Conjunctive terms If you bear in mind these points, you will find it easier to understand sentences. Unit 2 Building up your skills in answering questions ‘Students read a range of sentences that appear in the JLPT. ‘When you have got used to the differing forms used in Understanding the content (short and medium- length texts) and Finding out information, you will be better able to understand sentences fully and efficiently, Understanding the content (short and medium-length texts) ‘The questions are presented in the same format as in the actual examination. In the explanations given after questions, you will find sentences that are the same as in these questions. ‘The following guidance is given to make it easier to read. + Breaks in the sentences + Nouns that have been modified and elements that modify nouns + Words that have been omitted + Sentence types (Explanations for sentence types are indicated by numbers, which you can Took up in the table “Sentence types usefil in reading for N4 Lever” on pp.104-108). + Symbols indicating what you need to focus on to answer the question ‘Try to read the explanations and grasp the points necessary for understanding the text. Finding out information Included in the JLPT launched in 2010 were Guide-type information and Notifications, etc. You read these texts in a different way to texts in the Understanding the content texts. For example, you do not read carefully from the beginning through to the end, but rather work out the aim and purport of the text in overall terms or read only the parts that you need to know. In the examination, you will encounter a wide range of text types. In this book, the following of these text types are addressed, * Guide-type information + Notifications For users of thisbook (aI) * Written notices Practice these approaches and try to familiarize yourself with ways to obtain the information you need. Unit 3 Addressing multiple questions In this part you answer questions that have the same format as questions in the actual examination, as follows: + Understanding the content (short texts): 1 question with a short text of about 100-200 characters in length * Understanding the content (medium-length texts): 4 questions with a medium-length text of around 450 characters + Finding out information: 2 questions on Guide-type information and Notifications, ete. of around 400 characters in length It is important to answer a large number of questions to be able to read sentences quickly and accurately. If you do this in Unit 3, you will gradually build up your reading comprehension skills Vocabulary In Units 2 and 3, words and phrases used in the questions are discussed. If you do not understand them from the notes given at the bottom of the texts, you ean find more help in this section, These words are used frequently, use this opportunity to learn them. ‘Table comparing questions in the JLPT and in this textbook (excluding Mock Examination) [eso] eons ene en Te GOR Understanding the content | Unit 1 Building up your reading skills (short texts) Unit 2 Building up your skills in answering questions Understanding the content (short texts I to 5) Unit3 Addressing multiple questions 1, Understanding the content (short texts) Understanding the content | Unit 1 Building up your reading stills (medium-length texts) Unit 2 Building up your skills in answering questions Understanding the content (medium-length texts 1 and 2) Unit3 Addressing multiple questions 2, Understanding the content (medium-length texts) Finding out information 2 Building up your skills in answering questions.
