Literary Devices: Personification
Personification is a figure of speech in which a thing – an idea or an animal – is given human
attributes or qualities. The non-human objects are portrayed in such a way that we feel they have
the ability to act like human beings. So, when we talk about non-human things as I they were
human, we personify them.
For example, when we say, “The sky weeps,” we are giving the sky the ability to cry, which is a
human quality. Thus, we can say that the sky has been personified in the given sentence.

A. Directions: In each sentence, an object is personified. Identify the object that is being
personified and explain which human trait or action is applied to the object or idea.
1. When Monica walked through the shoe store, each shiny pair of high heels called out to her.

AUTUMN
1. Poems that do not rhyme are called “free verse”. The poet Wang Wei wrote the poem
“Autumn” in free verse.
Do you like these types of poems? Circle your answer and give a reason for your choice.

Reason: I like free verse poem because it is easy to write but I like rhyming word poems too. It is
easy to memorize and more I like to types of poem. I also love to write poems I write free verse
and rhyming poems too. So I like free verse and rhyming poems and to be a poet you should be
good at both types of poems.

Some lines from the poem are given below. In the space provided after each of the lines,
write your own lines but with a rhyming end making your own poem!

It has turned cold


And I am very bored
I take my cane
On the rain
The rays of the setting sun
Turns into night
I throw back my head
On the bed
