Fact vs.

Opinion
Minilesson Mentor STACK

TEACHING POINT A fact is something that we know is true. It can be proved to be

true. An opinion is something a person thinks or feels and cannot be proven. Words
such as believe, feel, best, and worst are clues that a statement is an opinion.

MODEL AND PRACTICE Display the sentences below. Help students decide which
sentences are facts and which are opinions. Discuss why.

• I think Mom’s hair looks beautiful today. (O)

• Mom got her hair cut short. (F)
Continue giving other example sentences of facts and opinions and discussing them.
You may want to gather sentences from the mentor stack, make up your own
sentences, or have the students create sentences of their own.

Direct students to the Resource Download Center, p. 97. Have the students look at
sentences and determine if the statements are facts or opinions.

Independent Writing
After the minilesson, students should transition to independent writing. Have the
students try to use facts and opinions to strengthen their writing.

Share Back
Have students share their writing with a partner. Ask them to share the factual and
opinion sentence they added to their writing.
