Punctuating Titles

• The titles of major works are set apart from the rest of the sentence. Major works are magazines,
long poems, books, journals, newspaper, movies, television shows, etc.

• In print, titles of longer works are italicized, or printed in italics. In handwritten papers,
underlining is used to set off the title of the major work.

• Quotation marks are used to enclose the titles of shorter works. Essays, short stories, short poems,
articles, songs, chapters of books, etc.

• You should capitalize the letter of the first word, the last word, and all important words in a title.

In print: Timothy returned the book to the Handwritten: Timothy returned the book
library called The Presidents of America by to the library called The Presidents of
Richard Maclum. America by Richard Maclum.

Directions: Read the sentences below. Underline or use quotation marks wherever needed in the
following sentences.

1. The song, Roar, is sung by my favorite singer Katy Perry.

2. Orbis Pictus is among one of the earliest picture books for children.

3. This week, in our language arts class, we’re studying T.S. Eliot’s poem Portrait of a Lady.

4. The short story, To the Rescue, was about the life of a firefighter.

5. My grandpa still buys a subscription to Scientific American, which was first published in 1845.

6. Sammy enjoyed Vanessa Horton’s story, The Soundproof Room and her novel, The Queen in
Gold.

7. The 12th chapter in my math book, Course 2: Pre-Algebra, is called Polynomials.

8. The movie, The Pianist, is a true story of one man’s survival in Warsaw (World War 2), 1939-1945.

9. The article, Science in the Wild, in Discover magazine was quite interesting and very informative.
