Department of Civil Engineering Master of Engineering (MEng) Degree Requirements Area of Study: Geotechnical Engineering In addition to fulfilling the

University requirements for the Master of Engineering (MEng) degree, a student enrolled in the Civil Engineering graduate Program in the area of Geotechnical Engineering must satisfy the following requirements: General A minimum of 30 semester credit hours of approved courses is required for the Master of Engineering degree (MEng). The university places limitations on these credit hours in addition to the requirements of the geotechnical engineering program that are listed below. A complete discussion of all university requirements is found in the current Texas A&M University Graduate Catalog under the heading The Degree of Master of Engineering. For example, university requirements include a final examination and one or two written reports. The Department of Civil Engineering requires that the examination focus on at least one of the written reports. The report(s), however, need not involve results of research conducted by the candidate. It is the students responsibility to propose a degree plan that meets all university, department, and program requirements. Degree Plan The students advisory committee, in consultation with the student, will develop the proposed degree plan. The proposed degree plan must be typed on the official form as it appears on the Internet at http://www.tamu.edu/rgs/graduatestudies and submitted to the geotechnical engineering graduate advisor with endorsements by the students advisory committee. The plan should be submitted before the student has completed 9 semester credit hours that will be applied toward the 30 semester credit hour requirement. The office of graduate studies blocks students from further registration if a degree plan is not filed before the end of the second semester of study. The degree plan must also conform to the Departments MEng degree requirement. Prerequisites (cannot apply toward 30 semester credit hour requirement) The following course is considered prerequisite to any MEng program of study in geotechnical engineering: CVEN 365 or equivalent that is approved by the geotechnical engineering faculty. Courses listed for which the student lacks credit must be completed, but those credits cannot be applied toward the 30 semester credit hour requirement. Required Geotechnical Engineering Courses A student must take a minimum of 21 credit hours of geotechnical engineering courses in order to complete the requirements of the MEng degree in the specialty area of geotechnical engineering. CVEN 435 and/or CVEN 436 can be applied to the 21 credit hour requirement. The required core courses vary each year depending on course offerings. A complete list of the core courses will be available on the department web site before the beginning of each academic year or can be obtained from the graduate advisor. A maximum of 3 credit hours of CVEN 685 can be applied towards the 21 credit hour requirement. Additional Coursework The students advisory committee, in consultation with the student, will select the remaining semester credit hours of coursework to complement the overall objectives of the proposed degree plan. Final examination Each student is required to pass an oral final examination.
