STUDIO PRACTICE Ill | BASIC DESIGN MAJOR & MINI THESIS Date: Nov 8, 2023 Lecturer: Ms. Zahra Kazmi Institute of Design & Visual Arts! Interior Design Department SITE ANALYSIS ASSIGNME! Statement: For this Assignment you will analyze a building site, your home’s building site The first step of any building design process is to analyze the site conditions based on four site analysis categories; 1. Culture & Community © Site Location/ Position (Site location & its importance, Historical & spatial development, Literature, Research, Meetings with other people, Sites old & new photos, Site’s location mapping in relation to the nearest settlements & other notable places). Tools; Location Map & GIS. * Site Context & Collective Memory (Where the architecture & buildings are located and Dialogue between your project & its surrounding. Neighborhood, City, Spitit of space, Traceable Places, Culture, History, Literature). * Surrounding Land & Building Use (Vertical & Horizontal Functions of building & uses of land around the site, Existing neighboring such as noise or smells). Tools; Graphically show in Model, * Views (Connection between inside & outside). Tools; Photographic documentation! Images. * Neighborhood Structure (Map of facilities within five- & ten-minute walking distances). Tools; Map of destinations & Isochrone Map * Consultation & Engagement (Events, Local interest groups, No. of people, Activities within & around site). Tools; Photography, Pie & Chart diagrams. * Socio Economies (Age profile & ethnic mix of areas/ Lifestyle). Tools; Statistical Analysis; Pie & Chart diagrams */” Market Analysis (Accommodate commercial, community, employment & other uses). Tools; Map, Photography, Pie & Chart diagrams. 2. Landscape + Typography (Site contours ie, lagely flat, Slopping, Mountainous, & Steep Areas). Tools; Contour Map, Diagrams or Sketches. © Green & Blue Infrastructure (Existing water bodies, Rivers, Streams, Marshes, Lakes, Ponds, Woodland, Fields, Hedgerows & Trees within & around the site) Tools; Map of features & Photography. * | Tonalities (Color Harmony in & site surrounding). Tools; Photographic documentation & use Google color palette generator. Ecology (Habitats, Natural Structure; Floora & Vegetation). Tools; Map of features & Constraints. Soft & Hard Landscape (Soft Elements: Flowers, Soil, Plants & Color Scheme/ Havier Elements: Stone, Rocks, Patios, Drive ways). Tools; Photographic Documentation’ Maps & Sketches Ground Relations (Forms, Plans, Entrances, Program, Orientation & Heights), Microclimate (Wind direction, Sun direction & sun path across the site, Seasons; Day Night/ Light & Shadows, existing structure planting & topography, Noise & Odor Pollution). Tools; Map & 3D Model . Movement & Infrastructure Road Hierarchy & Access (Plot Primary & Secondary surrounding roads, eycle routes, public ways, footpaths & hierarchy of the road networks). Tools; Map Lynch Analysis (Paths, Edges, District, Nods, & Land marks). Axis Patterns (Positive & Negative Areas). Public Transport (‘Transportation with other settlements, important axles, junctions, vehicle roads, penetration roads, open & closed car parks, traflic flow direction, public transportation system, vehicle counts, Plot bus stops & railway stations. Note frequency & destinations). Tools; Generate Map Diagrams Utilities & Infrastructure (Existing supplies of water, gas, power & communications). {. Built Form Site Geometry (Total Area & Site Dimensions, Relation to the Program; Vertically & Horizontally). Solid Void (Abstract aréa analysis, relation between positive & negative, light & shadow, full & empty volumes). Tools; Drawing that maps buildings as solid blocks, & clearly define the space around them. Site Elements (Pattems, Colors, Scale, Volumes, Shapes, Material Used, Doors, Windows, Floor Levels, Balconies). Land Use (Commerce, Housing, Manufacturing, Education, Administration, Health, Green Spaces, Warehouses, Empty, Construction etc.). Construction Technology (Skeleton system: wood, reinforced, concrete, steel, masonry system; stone, brick, wood, prefabricated system ete.). Site Height (Site height analysis, number of floors for sun-shade condition detestation; Single story, ground +1, ground +2...) Urban Form (Map the pattern of streets, buildings, public & private space surrounding the site. Highlight the orientation of the building around the site). Tools; ‘Used Maps for Block Plan, Figure Ground Plan, Building Orientation Plan. Architectural Properties (Site & surrounding buildings Structural situation analysis; good, Medium, Bad, New building, Renovation or unqualified buildings that need to be demolished). * History & Archeology (Retaining historic features on or around site & reflecting historic building lines). Tools; Inventory of historie features, timeline of significant events, historie maps, photos & painting, consult cadw. * Building Scale, Height & Density (of site & surrounding development). Tools; Photography, Modeling & Sketching). * Building Character & Building Traditions (Prevalent building forms, architectural character, boundary treatments & dominant local building materials & building forms should be analyzed & interpreted). Tools; Photography/ building street elevations. Task: * Conceptual models, Sequential view, Sketches, Thumbnails, Collages, Maps drawings & Photographic documentation. # Study & make site model in solid, voids & linear lines. Choose Appropriate Scale (Architectural Seale). * Show graphically through sketching by using pencil, felt-tip pens, colored & rendered markers or digitally, the elements listed above. Required Readings: * Sie & Context Analysis Guide: Capturing the value of site. (Llywodraeth Cymru Welsh Government. www.gov.wales * Architecture Student Guide 1 Site Analysis by Tifa.
