Gas Collection Techniques

The document describes methods for collecting various gases, including carbon dioxide, hydrogen, and oxygen. Carbon dioxide and hydrogen can be collected through downward or upward delivery over water, while oxygen is collected by displacing water. All gases can also be collected using a gas syringe, which connects to a flask and measures the volume of gas collected as the plunger moves outward. Hydrogen gas is noted as being extremely flammable and requires no naked flames.

Carbon dioxide, CO2

Collected by downward delivery or over water (slightly soluble).

Hydrogen, H2

Collected by upward delivery or over water.

Hydrogen gas is EXTREMELY FLAMMABLE – ensure there are no naked flames.

Oxygen, O2

Collected by gas over water(displacement of water)

Gas syringe method

All gases can be collected using a gas syringe.

How is a Gas Syringe used to Collect a gas?

The gas syringe is connected by a tube to the flask that

is giving off the gas as shown in the picture below.
The gas syringe has marks along its length
that allow the volume of collected gas to be measured.
As the volume of collected gas increases
the plunger moves further out of the syringe.
