Nepal decided to allow India's Satluj Jal Vidyut Nigam (SJVN) Limited to develop a second
hydropower project in the country.
Presently, SJVN is developing a 900-MW Arun-III hydroelectric project.
It is a run-of-river project located on the Arun River in Eastern Nepal.
It is scheduled to be completed in 2024.
Prime Minister (PM) Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda chaired a meeting of the Investment Board
Nepal (IBN).
It approved the draft project development agreement (PDA) to be signed with SJVN to develop
the 669-megawatt (MW) Lower Arun Hydropower project in eastern Nepal.
Before implementation, the draft needs to be endorsed by the Council of Ministers.
This is the third project undertaken, all through negotiation windows, on the Arun River after the
900 MW Arun-III and 695 MW Arun-IV hydroelectricity projects.
The previous meeting of the IBN had approved 92.68 billion rupees investment for the
development of the project.

Iraq announces plans for $17 billion transportation project linking Asia to Europe
Iraq’s prime minister Mr Mohammed Shia al-Sudani announced plans for a $17 billion regional
transportation project intended to facilitate the flow of goods from Asia to Europe.
The planned Development Road project would facilitate the movement of goods from the Gulf to
Europe by way of the Grand Faw Port in Basra, in southern Iraq, which would be connected to
Turkey, then to Europe, through a network of railways and highways.
The Development Road project will link the Grand Faw Port in Iraq’s oil-rich south to Turkey, with
plans for high-speed trains, local industry connections, and potentially oil and gas pipelines.
The planned project, which would involve the construction of about 1,200 km (about 745 miles) of
railways and highways, will be “an economic lifeline and a promising opportunity for the convergence
of interests, history, and cultures.
The project is expected to be completed by 2029.

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has won the bid to host the 2025 World Conservation Congress
(WCC) of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
The WCC is the world's largest and most important gathering of conservationists, and it is expected to
draw more than 10,000 delegates from over 160 countries.
The IUCN WCC in 2025 in Abu Dhabi, UAE is expected to bring an estimated 10,000-15,000 delegates
from over 160 countries across the globe and will be an event which could galvanise conservation
actions to protect our planet, amid local and global challenges.
The 2025 WCC will be held in Abu Dhabi from October 10-21, 2025.
The event will be an opportunity for conservationists from around the world to come together and
discuss the most pressing environmental challenges facing our planet.
The WCC is also expected to produce a number of important resolutions and recommendations that
will help to guide future conservation efforts.

Montana has become the first United States (US) state to ban the popular social media app
TikTok.
Montana Republican Governor Greg Gianforte signed the law expecting a legal fight.
The law, scheduled to take effect Jan. 1, 2024, also faces questions over whether it can be
enforced.
TikTok is facing growing calls from some U.S. lawmakers to ban the app nationwide over
concerns about potential Chinese government influence over the platform.

The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) elected 5 countries Algeria, Guyana, Sierra
Leone, Slovenia and South Korea as non-permanent members of the United Nations Security
Council (UNSC) for a 2-year term starting on January 1, 2024 & serving till December 31, 2025.
These new members will replace Albania, Brazil, Gabon, Ghana and the United Arab Emirates
(UAE) at present when their two-year term ends on 31 December 2023.

UNDP launches 3rd cohort of 4 ocean innovators
The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) launched its 3rd cohort of 4 ocean
innovators to demonstrate the compelling roles of marine spatial planning (MSP), marine
protected areas (MPAs) and new environmentally and socially sustainable economic activities for
a healthy and resilient ocean.
UNDP’s Ocean Innovation Challenge (OIC) will provide financial, mentoring and incubator
support to these 4 ocean innovators, thereby contributing to Sustainable Development Goal 14
(SDG14 targets 14.2, 14.5 and 14.7).
Through its Ocean Promise, UNDP has committed to deliver at least 100 Ocean Innovations by
2030.
Supported by Sida and Norad, the 3rd cohort receives financial support to ocean innovators of up
to US$250,000 for 2 years, mentors and incubates innovative solutions that are transformational,
scalable and replicable.

● The World Bank (WB) launched its first dedicated road safety project in South Asia with a USD
358 million financing agreement signed in Dhaka with the government of Bangladesh.
● The project seeks to improve road safety and reduce fatalities and injuries from road crashes in
selected cities, high-risk highways, and district roads.
● 2 national highways of Bangladesh, Gazipur-Elenga (N4) and Natore-Nawabganj (N6), will be
taken up for the implementation of this project.

● The Comptroller and Auditor General (C&AG) of India is the Chair of the Supreme Audit
Institutions-20 (SAI20) Engagement Group under India's Group of 20 (G20) Presidency.

● The Comptroller and Auditor General of India is the supreme audit institution of India, established

India, Australia add 15 new areas for talks on Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement
● India and Australia have decided to expand the negotiations on the Comprehensive Economic
Cooperation Agreement (CECA) by including 15 more areas like agri-tech, critical minerals,
space and sports which have never been part of any trade deal that India has been part of.
● For the first time, these new segments would become part of a trade pact being negotiated by
India.
● The next round of talks are scheduled for July,2023.
● On Indo-Pacific Economic Framework for Prosperity (IPEF), Additional secretary in the
department of commerce Rajesh Agrawal stated that India has an observer status on the trade
pillar and it is observing the developments “very” closely.
About IPEF :
● IPEF was launched jointly by the US and other partner countries of the Indo-Pacific region on
May 23, 2022 in Tokyo.
● The framework is structured around 4 pillars relating to trade, supply chains, clean economy and
fair economy (issues like tax and anti-corruption).
● India has joined all the pillars except the trade one.
● Australia, Brunei Darussalam, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Japan, Republic of Korea, Malaysia, New
Zealand, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, the US and Vietnam are members of the bloc.

United Kingdom to Host 1st global summit on Artificial Intelligence
● United Kingdom (UK) Prime Minister Mr Rishi Sunak has announced that Britain, UK will host the
first major global summit on Artificial Intelligence (AI) safety.
● The summit will bring together key countries, leading tech companies and researchers to agree
on safety measures to evaluate and monitor the most significant risks from AI.
● The UK and US are two of the only three countries in the world to have a tech industry valued at
more than $1 trillion.

● Indian Farmers Fertiliser Cooperative Limited (IFFCO) has started exporting the world’s first Nano
urea invented and manufactured indigenously in India to the US.
● An agreement to export Nano urea was signed between IFFCO and Kapoor Enterprises Inc of
California.
● The nano urea is a revolution in the agriculture sector as it has the potential to reduce storage
space and money.
● A 500 ml bottle of IFFCO Nano Urea Liquid has the capacity to replace at least one bag of
conventional Urea.

Prime Minister participates in "India and USA: Skilling for Future" event with First Lady of USA
● Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi and First Lady of USA Dr. Jill Biden participated in an event

China & Pakistan sign $4.8 billion deal to build 1,200-megawatt nuclear power plant
● China and Pakistan signed an agreement of $4.8 billion to set up a 1,200-megawatt nuclear
power plant in Punjab province.
● Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif witnessed the signing of the deal under which Beijing
would build a 1,200-megawatt Chashma-V nuclear plant at Chashma in the Mianwali district of
Punjab.
● It is a sign of increasing economic cooperation between Pakistan and China.
● Pakistan’s sixth nuclear power plant was opened two years ago in Karachi.
● Karachi Nuclear Power Plant (KANUPP) is the first nuclear power plant in Pakistan.

● With this portal, DAHD will facilitate the regulatory approval process with transparency to assess
and examine veterinary product proposals will be more streamlined through seamless integration
with the SUGAM portal of Central Drugs Standard Control Organization.
● The launch of the NANDI portal is another notable undertaking following the animal vaccination
coverage initiative and Mobile Veterinary Units (MVUs).
Centre approves Rs. 56,415 crores to 16 States for Capital Investment under ‘Special Assistance to
States for Capital Investment 2023-24’ Scheme
● The Department of Expenditure, Ministry of Finance, Government of India, has approved capital
investment proposals of Rs. 56,415 crores in 16 States in the current financial year. Approval has
been given under the scheme entitled ‘Special Assistance to States for Capital Investment 2023-
24’.
● The Capital investment projects in diverse sectors have been approved including health,
education, irrigation, water supply, power, roads, bridges and railways.
● Under the scheme, special assistance is being provided to the State Governments in the form of
50-year interest free loan up to an overall sum of Rs. 1.3 lakh crore during the financial year
2023-24.
● The scheme has eight parts, Part-I being the largest with allocation of Rs. 1 lakh crore.
India and UAE signed a Mutual Recognition Arrangement for Authorized Economic Operators
● India and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) have signed a Mutual Recognition Arrangement (MRA)
for Authorized Economic Operators (AEO).
● The agreement was formally inked on the sidelines of the 141st/142nd sessions of the World
Customs Organization's (WCO) Customs Co-operation Council meeting held in Brussels,
Belgium.
Aim :
● To promote trade facilitation, improve the ease of doing business, and encourage investments.
● Earlier in September 2021, India and the United States (US) had signed a MRA AEO.
